Multiple reports suggest Dallas Mavericks star Luka Doncic will be the cover athlete for the NBA 2K22 video game.

  • The cover — first appeared on the Instant Gaming website but has since been deleted — shows the young NBA star heading toward the basket in a blue Mavs jersey, according to Mavs Moneyball, the SB Nation blog for the Dallas Mavericks.
  • “While obviously just art at this point, it’s fair to assume Luka Doncic is a real possibility for the cover,” Moneyball reports.

NBA 2K did not immediately respond when I asked about the rumored Luka Doncic cover.

There was also some speculation that Dirk Nowitzki will be the cover star for the Legends edition of the game (which is often more expensive and comes with more content), per Sports Illustrated.

Each year, NBA 2K releases a new game with a normal cover and then a legend cover. For NBA 2K21, the game released three covers — one for the normal current generation version (Damian Lillard), one for the normal next-generation version (Zion Williamson) and one for the legend version (Kobe Bryant).

The NBA 2K21 cover made history

For NBA 2K21, Zion Williamson made the cover, becoming the youngest NBA star to be on the cover, as I wrote for the Deseret News. Before Williamson made the cover, Chris Paul (NBA 2K8) and Anthony Davis (NBA 2K16) were the youngest players to appear on the covers for the annual NBA video game.
