Boys Basketball

Logan Woolstenhulme, South Summit (Sr.)

Logan Woolstenhulme was already leading the state in scoring, and then he went off for 46 points in a game last week to pad his lead as the senior continues his dominant season.

“Logan is a player who does it all on both ends. Yeah it is nice he leads the state in scoring and is 132 in the nation in scoring but he also does many more things. He is ranked 21st in the nation in double doubles while averaging almost 12 rebounds a game,” said South Summit coach Norm Hayter, who added that Woolstenhulme also takes on the task of guarding opponents’ top players.

He also averages 10.8 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 2.5 steals and 2.5 blocks.

“This is why we believe he is the most dominant player in the state of Utah. We are grateful for Logan’s leadership he has given us the past three years and we cannot wait to see where his future takes him,” said Hayter.

Last week he scored 46 points in a win over Grantsville and followed it up with 24 points against Morgan in a loss. He’s scored 20-plus points in every games this season.

Girls Basketball

Sutton Villa, Provo (Fr.)

Just a freshman, 6-foot-5 center Sutton Villa has made an immediate impact on the floor for the Bulldogs this year, a big reason they’re 15-2 on the season.

Through 17 games this season, Villa leads Provo in scoring (12.1 ppg), rebounds (8.7 rpg) and blocks (5.1 bpg).

“Sutton is so fun to coach. She is a hard worker and loves playing basketball. She is quick to smile as she competes and that is so refreshing. She is contributing on such a high level even as a freshman. I am so excited to continue to watch her develop,” said Provo coach Amanda Barker.

Last week in a 54-29 win over Orem, she recorded 12 points, 10 rebounds and seven blocks. Earlier this year in a win over Palo Verde, Nevada, she recorded a triple double with 11 points, 12 rebounds and 11 blocks.

Boys Swimming

Huckleberry Burton, Mountain Ridge (Sr.)

Huckleberry Burton’s versatility is a great asset to Mountain Ridge’s swim team this season.

With less than a month remaining in the season, Burton ranks in the top 10 in 6A in seven different strokes.

“Huckleberry is the epitome of the type of athlete we love to see on our team. Over the course of his high school swimming career, he has transformed himself from a gangly freshman to one of the fastest swimmers in the state,” said Mountain Ridge coach Katherine Crenshaw. “Huck puts his all into every practice while pushing his teammates to work hard. At the same time, if you were to ask any of the athletes who the funniest person is on the team, the instant answer would be Huck. His quick wit and special brand of delivery keeps everyone laughing even when they’re struggling to complete difficult workouts. He is a leader on this team that everyone looks up to, and we are so grateful to have had him on the team for these four years.”

Not surprising, because of that versatility he owns the best time in 6A in the 200 individual medley, posting a 1:59.72 at the Wasatch Invite last month.

His specialty is the 100 backstroke, an event he placed third in last year at the 6A state meet. Currently, his time of 53.00 in the 100 back ranks second in 6A this year and seventh in the entire state.

Girls Swimming

Rori Sorenson, Skyline (So.)

This sophomore made a name for herself in her first state meet last year in winning the 200 freestyle state title, and she hasn’t slowed down since.

Rori Sorenson continues to be one of the best distance swimmers in the state, as she owns the best time in 5A in both the 200 and 500 free.

“What sets her apart and makes her so special is her competitive spirit, and with that her desire to do her best not only for herself but for her team as well,” said Skyline coach JP Hynes. “She comes to practice every day ready to get better and is highly coachable, as she’ll go out of her way to ask for feedback. ”

Sorenson’s time of 1:56.85 ranks as the third best in the entire state this season, while her 500 free time of 5:13.36 ranks third in the entire state.

She’s also a key member of Skyline’s relays as she was part of last year’s 400 free relay state championship team.

Sorenson was also a member of Skyline’s state championship volleyball team in the fall.

Boys Wrestling

Austin Ellis, Davis (So.)

Austin Ellis continue his impressive sophomore campaign for the Darts with a strong showing last weekend at the Davie Swensen Invite at Mountain Crest High School.

Ellis went 3-0 to win his 144-pound bracket, which included a win over Juab’s Kaden Martineau in the final 10-3.

Earlier this month in a big match at the Ross Brunson All-Star Duals at UVU, Ellis edged Morgan’s Drew Korth in a great match 6-5.

Regan Heywood, Wasatch (Sr.)

View Comments

Wasatch senior Regan Heywood played a key role in leading Wasatch to the 5A dual tournament title last weekend at Hillcrest High School.

Heywood went 2-1 in her three matches to help the Wasps ultimately defeated Northridge in the championship 66-17.

Heywood improved to 21-7 on the season with her performance.

She finished third at the 5A state meet last year at 135 pounds, and she’s working hard to improve upon that result this season. So far this season she’s recorded a first-place finish at the Rockwell Rumble earlier this month along with a win at the Ross Brunson All-Star Duals. She was a runner-up at the Skyhawk Showdown.
