High school competitive cheer: Four teams repeat as state champs in 2A and 1A all-girls and co-ed state championships (+photo gallery)

James has been covering high school sports in Utah for the Deseret News for three decades.

It was an evening of repeats at the 2A and 1A competitive cheer state championship on Wednesday at UVU.

In both 2A and 1A, the same two teams that won the all-girl and co-ed state titles a year ago won them again after terrific performances again on the floor of the UCCU Center.

In 2A, North Summit swept all three categories in the all-girl competition to win its third straight state title. North Sevier came in second place overall after finishing runner-up in two of three categories. Parowan, San Juan and Enterprise round out the top five.

In the 2A co-ed division, Beaver prevailed in two of three categories to claim a repeat title. Gunnison Valley, South Sevier and Duchesne rounded out the top four teams.

Rich won its second straight 1A all-girls state title with another impressive championship performance as it finished first in all three categories. Monticello, Panguitch, Tabiona and Wayne rounded out the top four.

In the 1A co-ed division, only two teams participated in all three categories, Piute and Tintic, with the T-Birds earning the state title.

This is the third year the UHSAA has sanctioned competitive cheer and handed out state championship trophies.
