The preliminary round of the 3A state swim meet was held at BYU on Friday afternoon with teams and swimmers positioning themselves for Saturday’s finals, which get underway at 10 a.m.

Judge Memorial is the defending state champs in the boys and girls and both are the favorites to repeat.

Canyon View senior Kurt Morgan took center stage during the meet on Friday, and can now call himself the fastest swimmer in state history. Morgan set a new overall state record in the 50 freestyle as he touched the wall in 20.45, eclipsing the old record by .08 seconds.

He shaved .62 seconds off his season-best time of 21.07.

St. Joseph’s Gabe Jones set a new 3A record in the 100 butterfly as he finished with a time of 49.07, beating his season-best time of 51.29 by over two seconds.

Here’s a list of the top eight individual qualifiers for Saturday’s finals in each event.
