NEW ORLEANS — The Philadelphia Eagles stopped a dynasty, and, as a result, they are hoisting the Lombardi Trophy again.
The Eagles steamrolled the two-time defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 in Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome on Sunday night, earning Philadelphia its second NFL title in the past eight years.
The Philadelphia defense rattled Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs offense early and often, holding them to 23 yards in the first half. Mahomes was sacked six times, and Kansas City never crossed midfield until late in the third quarter.
The Eagles intercepted Mahomes twice in the second quarter, one leading to a Cooper DeJean pick-six and the other leading to an A.J. Brown touchdown catch after the Eagles started a drive inside the Chiefs 15.
Meanwhile, the Philadelphia offense capitalized on the moment, putting up 345 yards of total offense and scoring on seven possessions. Jalen Hurts threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns with one interception while also running for another score.
Eagles Utah tie who won a Super Bowl ring
- Former Utah and Timpview High wide receiver/punt returner Britain Covey: Covey was ruled out for the Super Bowl as he continues to deal with a lingering neck injury that landed him on injured reserve on Dec. 28. Covey played with Philadelphia in its Super Bowl appearance two years ago, but earned his first Super Bowl ring with Sunday’s win.
Historic implications
- The Chiefs were denied the chance to become the first team to win three straight Super Bowls.
- The Eagles won their second Super Bowl title in franchise history and played in the NFL’s title game for the third time in the past eight seasons, and second in the past three. Philadelphia lost to Kansas City in the Super Bowl two years ago.
- This was the 45th playoff game Chiefs coach Andy Reid had coached, breaking the record of former New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick (44). Belichick has 31 playoff wins as a head coach, while Reid stayed at 28 career playoff wins.
- This was the first time an NFL team made three straight Super Bowl appearances with the chance to three-peat. Buffalo made four straight in the late 1980s and early 1990s and lost all four, while New England appeared in three straight in the 2010s and won two, though they weren’t consecutive.
5 key plays
Long bomb for six: One play after a key fourth-down stop in Kansas City territory, Hurts threw deep to DeVonta Smith for a 46-yard touchdown pass to extinguish any last hope that the Chiefs might have had to close the gap. That put the Eagles up 31-0.
Fourth-down pass breakup: Kansas City finally got a drive out near midfield in the third quarter, but Mahomes had a pass batted down by Philadelphia’s Avonte Maddox on fourth and 5 at the Chiefs 46 to stop the desperation drive, with Kansas City already trailing 27-0.
Zach Baun diving interception: During the second quarter, the Eagles pinned Kansas City inside its own 5, then on the first play of the ensuing drive, Joe Thuney was blocked into Mahomes as Mahomes was throwing, causing an errant pass that Eagles linebacker Zack Baun made a diving interception on at the Kansas City 14. That set up a 12-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Brown two plays later to make it 24-0 with 1:35 until halftime.
Cooper DeJean pick-six: Kansas City’s offense was stuck in neutral throughout the first half, and then it got worse when rookie Cooper DeJean, on his birthday, intercepted a Mahomes pass and returned it 38 yards for a pick-six midway through the second quarter. That gave the Eagles a 17-0 lead.
Jahan Dotson 27-yard catch to the 1: The first of several long pass plays for Philadelphia set up the team’s first touchdown. On the Eagles’ second drive, Jahan Dotson caught a pass and got down inside the 1 — it was originally called a touchdown before being ruled he was short of the goal line. That 27-yard pass set up a 1-yard Jalen Hurts touchdown run on the Tush Push on the next play, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
