As the high school girls volleyball season gets underway this week — a week earlier than in year’s past — the usual suspect of contenders are expected to lead out in 2025.

Five of last year’s six state champs were tabbed as the team to beat in their respective classifications in the Deseret News preseason coaches rankings — Lone Peak, Skyline, Orem, Canyon View and Panguitch.

North Summit in 2A is the only preseason No. 1 that isn’t a defending state champ — though the Braves were a runner-up.

Lone Peak went 30-2 last season en route to a fifth straight 6A state championship, and led by reigning 6A Player of the Year Ava Burgess is the front runner to make it sixth straight. Rich High School owns the two longest state championship streaks in state history — eight (1999-2006) and six (1992-1997). Lone Peak could move into a second-place tie this season with another title.

The path will be slightly easier this year because of realignment. Pleasant Grove, last year’s 6A runner-up, is now in 5A.

The Vikings check in at No. 3 in the 5A preseason rankings, with defending champ Skyline getting the nod as the early favorite. Skyline is led by returning first team all-stater Isa Taylor.

A year ago, Orem went 28-4 en route to a repeat 4A state championship. All-staters Sarah Page, Scarlett Page and Madi Scott are all back as the Tigers shoot for a 3-peat this season in a deep 4A field.

In 3A, Canyon View won its first-ever state championship a year ago, and with five starters returning from a powerful offense, 3A’s coaches believe the Falcons are the team to beat again.

Defending 2A state champion North Sevier graduated its top five players from last year’s 31-1 team and opens the year ranked No. 4 in the preseason rankings. The team it beat in the final a year ago, North Summit, opens ranked No. 1 led by all-staters Ellie Stephens and Kate Smith.

In 1A, Panguitch graduated the bulk of last year’s top contributors, but led by Brooklyn Harland and Tayt Miller the Bobcats still have the talent to make a run at a third-straight state championship this season.

2025 preseason high school girls volleyball rankings
