A golden goal by Aubrie Robbins a minute and a half into overtime gave Pleasant Grove its first win of the season, defeating Timpanogos 2-1 Friday in the season opener.

Robbins put her team on her back, getting both goals for her side on the way to victory.

“We’ve had the motto this year of ‘No islands,’ meaning we do everything together,” said Pleasant Grove head coach Chris Ecalono. “In the second half everyone was playing together and in overtime everyone was playing together.

“Right before overtime I said somebody’s got to be willing to put their body on the line. Somebody’s got to be making that 20-yard sprint and we got that.”

It was a somewhat lackluster first half for both teams, with each side getting a couple of really promising opportunities that they were unable to convert.

Timpanogos was the one to get on the scoreboard first on a very nice transition goal by Yuna Han seven minutes into the second half, but Pleasant Grove evened the scoring up midway through the half when Robbins found herself open on the top of the box and powered a shot over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

The score stayed knotted up through the end of regulation, but Pleasant Grove didn’t wait long to put the pressure on in extra time. Just a minute and a half into the extra period, the Vikings had themselves a corner kick, and as the ball entered the box, chaos ensued as several bodies went after the ball, with Robbins getting to the ball and deflecting into the net for the victory.

“I told them that’s what it takes if we want to keep winning and to be a winning program like Pleasant Grove has been in the past,” Ecalono said. “My message to the team was that we need to see the same effort and energy in the 80 minutes of regulation that we saw in that minute and half of overtime.

“We’ve been talking about emphasizing the small details and celebrating those small details. To have those details manifest themselves tonight, I told them that we need to make sure to celebrate those things. To see it on the scoreboard and knowing those small things created the victory is going to be a reminder to us this week as we practice and prepare for region.”
