Here’s a recap of Friday’s large cross country meets in Utah, the Timpanogos Invite in Orem and the Blue Mountain Invite in Monticello.


Timpanogos Invite AM

In one of the first major cross country meets of the season on Friday afternoon, Herriman’s Jackson Spencer reminded everyone what the current pecking order of distance runners in Utah is.

Against a strong field at the Timpanogos Invite AM meet at Lakeside Park in Orem, Spencer ran away from the field and won by 23 seconds as he finished with a time of 15:02.3.

Mountain View’s Kyle Chipman finished second in 15:26.9, while Lehi’s Miles Braithwaite was third in 15:28.0

American Fork won the boys team competition, led by fifth-place finisher David Webb. The Cavemen finished with 104 points, with Riverton close behind with 106 points and Herriman in third with 125 points.

On the girls side, Lone Peak placed four runners inside the top 14 as it dominated the meet with a score of 66. Region foe American Fork finished second with 93 points, and Viewmont in third with 199 points.

Brighton sophomore Bridget Smit, a fourth-place finisher at last year’s 5A state meet, won the girls race with a time of 17:54.0, edging Highland’s Maddie Reeder, who finished second in 17:57.9.

American Fork’s Skye Jensen finished third in 18:01.3, while Lone Peak’s Maya Bybee was the top finisher for the first-place Knights.

Timpanogos Invite PM

Westlake’s boys and girls teams swept the team titles in the the evening portion of the Timpanogos Invite at Lakeside Park in Orem on Friday.

In the girls race, Westlake seniors Talia Anderson and Maya Parker went 1-2 at the finish line, with Anderson winning in 18:59.3, followed by Parker in 19:07.2.

Westlake finished with five runners in the top 20 to win the meet with a team score of 40 points. Pleasant Grove finished second with 113 points.

Salem Hills’ Haley Livingston finished third with a time of 19:10.1

For the boys, Westlake senior Matyas Bird finished first in a race of nearly 170 runners as he won with a time of 15:38.1. Alta’s Aidan Neal crossed in second with a time of 15:57.0, followed by another Westlake runner in third, Tanner Morgan.

Westlake’s boys won the team title with 65 points, followed by Wasatch with 90 and Jordan with 148.

Blue Mountain Classic

Central High School in Grand Junction, Colo., swept the boys and girls team titles at the Blue Mountain Classic at Loyd’s Lake Monticello on Friday afternoon.

San Juan’s girls finished second, with junior Sincere Nez finishing second individually.

The top Utah finisher in the boys race was Grand’s River Shaw, who finished in fourth place. San Juan’s Rosendo Martine finished fifth.
