High school girls volleyball: Top teams flex muscles during opening day of prestigious UVU Invite

The midseason UVU Invitational got underway on Thursday with many of the state’s top volleyball teams from 6A, 5A, 4A and 3A squaring off.

The 36-team field includes 17 teams in this week’s Deseret News top 25 power rankings.

The tournament continues on Friday and Saturday, with the eventual champion being crowned at UCCU Center on Saturday afternoon.

All teams played two round robin games on Thursday, with 11 teams opening the tournament with 2-0 records — Pleasant Grove, Orem, Woods Cross, Mountain Ridge, Corner Canyon, Skyline, Mountain View, Lone Peak, Desert Hills, Salem Hills and Skyridge.

Play resumes on Friday at 12 p.m., with the 11 undefeated teams joining Sky View, Idaho, in four groups of three teams.

The four group winners will participate in the Gold Division semifinals and finals on Saturday. The four runner-ups will participate in the Silver Division semis and the third-place finishers will participate in the Bronze Division semis.
