Final score

Utah 31, Wyoming 6

Utah’s offense started finishing in the second half, and combined with a dominant defensive effort, the Utes ran away with a win over Wyoming at War Memorial Stadium in Laramie, Wyoming.

Utah scored touchdowns on all four of its second-half drives to pull away and ended up with 541 yards of total offense in the victory.

The Utes also held the Cowboys to just 229 total yards and forced two turnovers, while holding an 11-minute time of possession edge.

Devon Dampier shook off a first half where Utah struggled to finish drives to end the game completing 27 of 41 passes for 230 yards and two touchdowns.

He also ran the ball for a team-high 86 yards on 13 carries, as the Utes churned out 311 yards on the ground.

Fourth quarter

Utah 31, Wyoming 6

1:12 — Utah tacked on a late touchdown of its own, going 75 yards in just six plays (all runs) before Hunter Andrews ran the final 11 yards for a touchdown. Utah 31, Wyoming 6.

Andrews had four carries for 46 yards on the drive.

4:23 — Wyoming is finally on the board, marching 75 yards before scoring on a 15-yard touchdown run from Terron Kellman on fourth-and-1 to keep the Cowboys from getting shut out.

Wyoming couldn’t convert a two-point attempt, though, keeping it an 18-point game. Utah 24, Wyoming 6.

8:35 — That’s three drives and three touchdowns for Utah in the second half.

Devon Dampier connected with JJ Buchanan for a 14-yard touchdown on third down, as Utah converted a Jackson Bennee interception and long return into a quick score. Utah 24, Wyoming 0.

9:58 — Jackson Bennee nearly took his second interception of the season to the house, intercepting Kaden Anderson on an overthow on third down and returning it 57 yards to the Wyoming 18.

Third quarter

Utah 17, Wyoming 0

0:23 — Make that back-to-back touchdown drives for the Utes.

Facing second-and-goal from the 8, Devon Dampier lost the ball while dropping back, coolly grabbed it off the ground, then looked downfield before hitting Larry Simmons in a tight window for the touchdown pass. Utah 17, Wyoming 0.

The 19-play, 80-yard drive was marred by several penalties, but Dampier kept it alive with a 22-yard dart to Dallen Bentley on a third-and-21, then a few plays later, Utah punched it in.

10:46 — Utah started off the second half with something the Utes didn’t do in the first half — score a touchdown.

The Utes drove 83 yards in nine plays (that included a key 23-yard run by Devon Dampier on a third-and-7) before NaQuari Rogers scored a 1-yard touchdown run on third-and-goal. Utah 10, Wyoming 0.

Utah got gains of 14 and 15 yards from Hunter Andrews — first a catch, then a run — to get the drive going.

Halftime

Utah 3, Wyoming 0

The Utes lead on the scoreboard, but it’s been a lot tighter game than expected.

Utah has just three points to show for holding a 272 to 78 edge in total yards, thanks to penalties and failing to finish drives.

The Utes were called for six penalties for 68 yards in the first half, compared to two for 20 for the Cowboys.

Utah also had a turnover inside the 10 from Nate Johnson and freshman kicker Dillon Curtis made just 1 of 4 field goals in the first half to make this a three-point game.

Second quarter

Utah 3, Wyoming 0

0:03 — Utah missed a third field goal in this first half, as Dillon Curtis had a 46-yard attempt just before halftime blocked.

2:02 — Utah gives it back on a turnover, as Nate Johnson was stripped inside the Wyoming 10, and the Cowboys recovered at their own 3.

3:19 — The first turnover of the night goes Utah’s way. John Henry Daley knocked the ball out of Wyoming quarterback Kaden Anderson’s hand, and teammate Lander Barton pounced on it at the Wyoming 46.

7:52 — Another penalty, this one a hold, was costly for Utah. The Utes, after starting a drive at their own 1, failed to scored after Dillon Curtis clanked a 45-yard field goal attempt on the left upright, no good.

Utah reached the Wyoming 30 and had a carry down to the 14, but the holding penalty wiped out that positive play and pushed the Utes back.

The highlight thus far for the Utes was a hurdle from Wayshawn Parker on a 16-yard carry on that drive.

14:30 — Moments after he made his season debut, Rabbit Evans is carted off the field. Tough break for the talented Utah safety. The CBS Sports Network TV broadcast announced it was a lower body injury.

First quarter

Utah 3, Wyoming 0

1:41 — Utah’s second series ended in a field goal attempt again, but this time, Dillon Curtis missed the 45-yard attempt wide right.

6:12 — Wyoming had a nice drive going — one that was aided by multiple Utah penalties, including a questionable defensive pass interference — but John Henry Daley’s fourth sack of the year, a 15-yarder, knocked the Cowboys out of field goal territory.
