Owen Griffin, Granger (Sr.)
Had a career day in leading Granger to the 46-7 win over Granger last week.
The senior completed 13 of 17 passes for 358 yards and five touchdowns.
“Owen Griffin is the kind of quarterback every coach dreams of — he leads by example, puts in the work when nobody’s watching, and never backs down from a challenge. He has the size, arm strength and discipline to make big throws, but what really sets him apart is his competitiveness and unshakeable determination,” said Granger coach Pete Smolin. “He’s not just a player—he’s a leader who lifts the whole team. Owen is a D1prospect QB who excels in all the controllables: attitude, character and effort.”
For the season, Griffin’s thrown for 1,302 yards and 16 touchdowns.
Girls Volleyball
Rylee Stewart, North Sanpete (Jr.)
A 3A first-team all-stater last year as a sophomore, Rylee Stewart is once again dominating this season.
The junior outside hitter as led the Hawks to a 12-0 record so far this season, including wins last week over Manti and Richfield.
“Rylee is a team-first player. She is fiercely competitive, driven on and off the court and is an excellent teammate and friend,” said North Sanpete coach Ricki Stewart. “Her ability to celebrate her teammates successes, push them in a positive direction and do her job well is unmatched. Rylee is an excellent student, works hard in the weight room and has high expectations for herself and those around her. She has made everyone around her better and she’s fortunate to be surrounded by a great team.”








Girl Soccer
Eliza Collings, Lone Peak (Sr.)
For each of the past four seasons, Lone Peak’s Eliza Collings has been the anchor of Lone Peak’s stingy defense, and this year has been no different.
With Collings in goal, Lone Peak has only allowed four goals this season as the Knights own a 10-1-1 record.
“Eliza hasn’t given up a goal since the start of region, only GK in the region with a clean sheet so far,” said Lone Peak coach Shantel Jolley. “She is a constant leader for our team both on and off the field and obviously a key part of our defense only giving up four goals so far this season.”
Collings has been a 6A first team all-stater each of the past two seasons, in addition to being named the keeper of the Deseret News High School Sports Awards Best 11 squad.
A TCU commit, Collings has tallied 7.5 shutouts this season and has 48.5 shutouts in her career, a state record.
Boys Cross Country
Peter Mecham, Orem (Sr.)
In a loaded Border Wars field last weekend at Valley Regional Park, Orem senior Peter Mecham outkicked Lehi’s Miles Braithwaite to finish first by one-tenth of a second.
Mecham finished the 5K race in 14:50.52, while Braithwaite finished second in 14:50.62. There were 238 runners who participated in the race.
“We are so lucky to have Peter on our team. He’s fast but more importantly he’s an incredible human. Peter is encouraging to his teammates, checks in with the younger athletes regularly, is kind, respectful and is an amazing example of hard work and dedication,” said Orem coach Marie Glahn.
Mecham is one of the top runners in 4A this fall and he’ll be in the hunter at the state meet next month as he looks to improve upon his third-place finish last season.
Girls Cross Country
Avery Barton, Ogden (Jr.)
Ogden junior Avery Barton beat out a field of 42 runners last week to win the Ogden/Weber City County Championships at the Weber County Fairgrounds.
Barton dominated the race with a time of 17:57.15, winning back over a minute.
“Avery is an incredible athlete who works hard in practice and when she gets into competition pushes herself even when that means running up front alone. Not only is she an outstanding runner but she is a great teammate always looking for ways to encourage others on the team,” said Ogden coach Merrilee Blackham.
Last season Barton ran for Bonneville High School, and in the 5A state meet as a sophomore she finished fifth in a very stacked field of runners.
Girls Tennis
Maggie Crosby, Snow Canyon (Sr.).
Snow Canyon’s Maggie Crosby ran her winning streak to 16 straight with three victories at the Westlake tournament last Friday.
The senior improved her first singles record this year to 19-1 with the victories.
“From the first day Maggie Crosby stepped on the court as Snow Canyon’s No. 1 player, she has been a hard-working, dedicated competitor. In addition to her competitive drive, what makes her special, is the way she elevates everyone around her,” said Snow Canyon coach Jill Russell. “She’s as committed to her teammates’ success as she is to her own. Maggie won state as a sophomore and continues to work hard every day. Her undefeated record in region play shows that she’s still hungry to improve.”
As a sophomore in 2023, Crosby won the 4A second singles state championship.
Boys Golf
Eastyn Ewell, Uintah (Sr.)
Uintah’s Eastyn Ewell shot a 66 in a Region 8 golf match last week as he continues to enjoy a fantastic senior season.
Led by Ewell’s 68 stroke average this fall, Uintah sits a top of the Region 8 standings with a 291 average team score. A year ago Ewell averaged a 73.1 in region play.
“I have coached Eastyn for his entire high school career. He is dedicated to being a better golfer, always. He has an incredible work ethic. Maybe more important, Eastyn is a great young man that is good to those around him and is continuous in being a person of integrity,” said Uintah coach John Elison. “He also maintains a 4.0 GPA which is equally important. This is a senior that we will miss in our program very much. Great young man, great golfer.”
Ewell tied for seventh at last year’s 4A state tournament with a 2-under and finishing third in Region 8.
Baseball
Antonio Moreno, Bryce Valley (Sr.)
Antonio Moreno’s leadership and team-first mentality have been the catalysts to a great regular season so far for the 14-5 Mustangs.
For the season, he’s hitting .457 with a .638 on-base percentage and a 1.291 OPS.
“Antonio “Cata” Moreno has been a huge reason for Bryce Valley’s success this year. On and off the field, Cata has been a leader and example of what it means to be a team player and have his teammate’s backs,” said Bryce Valley coach Tyler Chappell. “As our ace pitcher, he steps up to every challenge, and when he’s at shortstop, he’s pulling off highlight-reel plays each and every game. “
When he’s on the mound, Moreno maintains a 1.99 ERA with 51 strikeouts in 31.2/3 innings pitched.
