No. 8 Copper Hills at No. 1 Lone Peak

Region 3 champion No. 1 Lone Peak hosts No. 8 Copper Hills Thursday in a 6A quarterfinal clash featuring two of the classification’s most explosive offensive attacks.

These programs haven’t met in seven years, when Lone Peak dominated Copper Hills 5-0 in the 2018 6A first round.

Lone Peak (16-1-1) has rolled through the season, scoring 58 goals while allowing just eight en route to the Region 3 title. The Knights advanced to the quarterfinals with a convincing 3-0 victory over Westlake, with goals from Sami Schiffman, Macie Leavitt and Kate Fuller while Eliza Collings secured the shutout.

The Knights feature a balanced attack led by Fuller, whose 16 goals and 10 assists place her among 6A’s top offensive threats. The Chargers (10-7) defeated the Titans 4-2 in their August meeting, with senior Sophia Simms leading the way with a goal and two assists. Now, Corner Canyon looks to replicate that success and reach the semifinals for the first time since winning the 5A championship in 2018.

Syracuse (16-3) has been a semifinal fixture in recent years, reaching that stage twice in the past four seasons, including last year. The Titans are looking to avenge their early-season loss after capturing the Region 1 championship this season.

5A Quarterfinals

No. 8 Bountiful at No. 1 Kearns

Top-seeded Kearns will have a chance to silence skeptics Thursday when it hosts No. 8 Bountiful in the 5A quarterfinals, looking to prove its regular-season success translates against established programs outside Region 4.

Despite earning the tournament’s No. 1 seed with its Region 4 co-championship, Kearns (13-2) enters as an underdog against a Bountiful (11-5) program seeking its fourth straight semifinal appearance. The Cougars only played teams from their region this season, a region that’s struggled mightily in the playoffs, going 0-3 against teams from other regions while being outscored 20-0 in those matches.

These programs haven’t met since 2017, when Bountiful dominated Kearns 14-0 in a preseason matchup.

Kearns advanced to the quarterfinals with a 4-1 victory over West, with Thianna Garcia, Joseline Osorio and Stacy Hernandez all finding the net in the second half to break open a 1-1 halftime tie. The Cougars have scored 59 goals this season (3.9 per game), showcasing their offensive firepower.

Jane Hellewell and Emmy Sorensen have each recorded four assists, while goalkeepers Chloe Bryson and Ayleen Chavez have combined for four shutouts.

The winner advances to the semifinals to face either No. 4 Springville or No. 5 Timpview.

No. 5 Timpview at No. 4 Springville

One long semifinal drought will end Thursday when No. 4 Springville hosts No. 5 Timpview in a 5A quarterfinal matchup between Region 8 rivals.

Springville hasn’t reached the semifinal round since 2009 – a 16-year drought – while Timpview’s last semifinal appearance came in 2018. The programs will face each other for the third time this season with a coveted final four spot on the line.

These teams have split their regular-season meetings, with each winning on the other’s home field. Timpview (14-4-1) dominated the first encounter 3-0 at Springville on Aug. 26, but the Red Devils (13-5-1) exacted revenge with a 3-1 victory at Timpview on Oct. 2.

The Red Devils have had the upper hand in this rivalry recently, winning four of the six meetings over the past three years since the teams were placed in the same region.

Both teams advanced to the quarterfinals with strong performances. Springville rallied from an early deficit to defeat Clearfield 3-2 in the second round, with goals from Sage Conrad, Adalie Dodd and Trevi Jackson. Timpview needed overtime to dispatch Wasatch 1-0, with Leah Atuaia scoring the golden goal.

The winner advances to the semifinals to face either No. 1 Kearns or No. 8 Bountiful.

No. 10 Brighton at No. 2 Olympus

Less than a year after their memorable championship showdown, No. 2 Olympus and No. 10 Brighton meet again in Thursday’s 5A quarterfinals with the Titans looking to continue their recent dominance in this rivalry.

These Region 6 rivals are meeting in the playoffs for the third time in four seasons, with Olympus eliminating Brighton in 2021, 2022 and most memorably in last year’s 5A championship match, which the Titans won in a shootout after a scoreless draw. Overall, Olympus has dominated the rivalry with an 11-2 record over the past five seasons.

The Titans have continued that success this season, sweeping both regular-season meetings. Olympus (14-3) earned a 1-0 victory at Brighton on Sept. 4, then completed the sweep with a 3-0 win at home on Sept. 29.
