BYU’s rivalry win over Utah just became even more memorable for a pair of Cougars.

BYU safety Tanner Wall was named the Big 12’s Defensive Player of the Week, while quarterback Bear Bachmeier earned Freshman of the Week honors for the fifth time.

Wall recorded 10 tackles — seven solo — against the Utes, also intercepting Devon Dampier in the fourth quarter for the defensive play of the game.

In his first taste of rivalry action, Bachmeier threw for 166 yards and a touchdown while running for another 64 yards and an additional score. Most importantly, he led the Cougars to a turnover-free outing.

Bachmeier’s hurdle over a Utah defender and a fourth-quarter touchdown run with his teammates pushing from behind will surely go down as iconic moments within the BYU-Utah rivalry.

Through his first seven collegiate contests, Bachmeier has passed for 1,386 yards, ran for 359 more and scored 17 touchdowns.

In addition to this week, Bachmeier has been named Big 12 Freshman of the Week after each of BYU’s wins over Portland State, Colorado, West Virginia and Arizona.
