North Summit can once again call itself the state champion, as it defeated Enterprise in four sets 25-21, 13-25, 25-17 and 25-18 in the 2A state title game on Saturday.

This is the first championship for North Summit since 2021 and sixth since 2016.

“It doesn’t even seem real right now. We got to the championship last year but lost, and it was always our goal to get back,” said North Summit head coach Samantha Stephens.

It wasn’t always smooth sailing for North Summit in the match Saturday. The team found itself up against a familiar opponent in Enterprise — a team it had faced just a few weeks earlier in another tournament.

In that previous meeting, North Summit prevailed in a thrilling five-set battle, so it came as no surprise that Enterprise entered this rematch determined to challenge the top seed at every opportunity.

Although North Summit wasn’t quite as sharp or consistent as it had been in past performances during the state tournament, Stephens remained confident in her team’s ability, knowing she had a resilient group of players capable of finishing the job when it mattered most.

“We knew we had the right girls and they battled and they really worked hard these last two weeks,” Stephens said. “We just battled and did what we needed to do, and it was awesome to see.”

After taking the opening set through consistent execution and solid teamwork, North Summit began to falter, committing a series of unforced errors and uncharacteristic mistakes that disrupted its rhythm, leading to its first dropped set of the tournament and shifting the momentum toward Enterprise.

“Enterprise has some really good hitters, and we were having a hard time on the outside,”Stephens said. “We just told them that we weren’t doing the little things. We weren’t calling balls, we weren’t covering, were weren’t passing well so we couldn’t run our offense.”

After having somewhat of a slow start to its season, North Summit was able to make the tiny corrections necessary, ultimately resulting in a season and championship the group won’t soon forget.

“We had a little bit of a slow start to the beginning of the season. I think we lost a total of four games early on and since then I think we went 26-0,” Stephens said.

“We just continued to tighten things up and knew we had to get better. Every game we were able to do that.”
