Utah’s Byrd Ficklin made quite the impression with his first collegiate career start last Saturday in a 53-7 win over Colorado.
As a result, the Utes’ true freshman quarterback earned a pair of Big 12 weekly awards Monday.
Ficklin not only was named Big 12 Freshman of the Week, he also shared Big 12 Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors with Houston quarterback Conner Weigman.
Ficklin rushed for 151 yards and a touchdown, a 63-yard score on the second play of the game. He also threw for 140 yards and two touchdowns in leading the Utes to 587 yards of total offense.
His 151 rushing yards were the most by a Utah quarterback in three decades.
Ficklin wasn’t the only Utah player honored with the weekly Big 12 awards. The Utes’ offensive line was named the league’s top O-line, the third time this season it has earned the Big 12 weekly honor.
BYU safety Faletau Satuala also earned Big 12 Co-Defensive Player of the Week honors, along with Houston defensive lineman Eddie Walls III.
In the Cougars’ come-from-behind 41-27 win at Iowa State, Satuala scored on a 40-yard pick-six to give BYU a two-score lead with 13:40 to play. He had a game-high 10 tackles and a tackle for loss in the win.
