High school girls volleyball: 3A Day 1 recap — North Sanpete, Delta, Canyon View, Morgan headed to 3A semis

North Sanpete 3, Grantsville 0

No team looked better in Monday’s first day of the 3A tournament than top-seeded North Sanpete. The Hawks’ message is clear: Any team wanting to win the 3A title will have to go through them.

North Sanpete’s confidence makes complete sense when you look at its season record, a perfect 30-0. Through six sets on Day 1, North Sanpete went 6-0 and the most points it ever allowed in a set was 13.

It is now headed to the semifinals after a dominant 3-0 sweep of Grantsville in the quarterfinals. Hawks’ head coach Ricki Stewart said her team was only focused on playing well.

“It’s never the goal to hold a team below a certain amount,” Stewart said. “Our goal is just to play clean on our side and we know if we can serve and pass, we’re pretty hard to beat.”

Hawks junior Rylee Stewart led the quarterfinal sweep with 21 kills and four aces. She also had 13 in its first-round matchup with Ben Lomond. Teya Bailey contributed on the net and on defense with six kills and 10 digs in the win.

It was a day of the Hawks just dominating the games it should win, and now it moves to tomorrow with the 3A championship in sight. It would be North Sanpete’s first championship since 2009.

“It’s the same message that it’s been all season,” coach Stewart said. “It’s just, ‘We win the next ball.’ And that’s been our focus. The goal was to never be undefeated. The goal was to be playing our best volleyball and just keep getting better as the season went on.”

Delta 3, Union 0

For the first time since 2016, No. 4 Delta is headed to the state semifinals after a 3-0 sweep over No. 5 Union in Monday’s 3A bracket play.

While Union never won a set, it kept things close throughout the 3A quarterfinal, particuarly in the third set when it earned a 15-11 lead. The Rabbits answered and won back a 19-16 lead. It then went on to win the set 25-21 for the 3-0 victory.

“Our team this year has grit, and I think that’s we just knew we’d have to come together,” said Delta head coach Kelbey Fisher. “They fight together and know we just can’t give up on each other. We knew they’d come back, we just had to take it one point at a time.”

Junior outside hitter Tayden King was stepped up for the Rabbits’ offense with 21 kills in its first-round game with Carbon. Then Daijah Willoughby led the offense in the quarterfinal with Union with 13 kills. Serving was also a strong point for Delta with 10 aces as a team in the win over Union.

Tomorrow’s semifinal with North Sanpete is significant for Delta as they rarely make it to day two of the state tournament still on the winners side of things. Fisher plans to take it with the same patience and attention to detail his team had in day one.

“I think the message is that grit, one point at a time,” Fisher said. “We know what we can compete with if we just have that grit, one point at a time attitude.”

Canyon View 3, Richfield 0

After winning its first-ever girls volleyball state championship just a year ago, No. 2 Canyon View looks ready to fight for a second. Outside of a few minor bumps along the way, the Falcons performed as it should as the second seed.

It made quick work of Emery in a 3-0 sweep in the first round, then met some resistance but still cleanly beat Richfield 3-0 in the 3A quarterfinals. It showed valuable resistance in its final set of the day after taking a decent lead, but allowed Richfield to crawl back. It still took the final set 25-22.

“I’m proud of them for staying relaxed and playing their game,” Canyon View head coach Lynette Whittaker said. “They haven’t got caught up in the pressure of the state tournament. I think they feel really comfortable on this court and they worked hard this last week at practice making some adjustments and I’ve seen it out on the court today.”

Canyon View got it done by committee in Monday’s quarterfinal. Kinzlee Brindley led the Falcons with 12 kills while Alyssa Haller added 10. Defensively, junior libero Jaci Wright led the effort while setter Ivy Marble orchestrated the offense with 36 assists.

“I just feel like they’re playing for each other,” Whittaker said. “They’re not caught up in their heads, they’re not worried about how they’re doing out on the court, they’re just playing for their teammates and it’s made a difference.”

The Falcons will continue its postseason run tomorrow at 10:15 a.m. against No. 3 Morgan.

Morgan 3, Ogden 0

No. 3 Morgan saw a bit of resistance from No. 6 Ogden but ultimately prevailed in straight sets 25-22, 25-22 and 25-19.

It was a generally clean day from the Trojans, who didn’t lose a single set today. Though it had its sloppy moments, particulalry in its second set of the first round with Logan, which it narrowly won 28-26.

“They played hard and I think we played well enough to win,” said Morgan head coach Liz Wiscombe. “I think that we’ve got a lot more in us than that.”

Wiscombe has no delusions. She knows the Trojans will need to play better in order to have success in tomorrows 3A semifinal against Canyon View.

“Not enough to know we got to get after tomorrow,” Wiscombe said when asked of the comfort level after securing a day two spot. “Tomorrow’s D-day and we got to come to play. That’s bottom line.”

North Sanpete 3, Ben Lomond 0

No. 1 North Sanpete dominated No. 16 Ben Lomond in a decisive 3-0 victory during the 3A first round. The Hawks’ serving anchored their win, with Autumn Oldroyd and Aydree Jacobson each contributing eight aces. On the attack, Rylee Stewart led with 13 kills, supported by McKenzie Madsen’s seven kills. North Sanpete convincingly took all sets, winning 25-8, 25-10, and 25-7, advancing onward in the playoffs with ease.

Grantsville 3, Juab 0

AlyBree Rogers powered No. 8 Grantsville to a decisive 3-0 victory over No. 9 Juab in the 3A playoffs with an 15 kills. The Cowboys swept the sets 25-21, 25-22, and 25-13 to eliminate the Wasps. Luiza Lupiao and SaDee Castagno each contributed with three aces, bolstering Grantsville’s offense.

Delta 3, Carbon 0

Tayden King powered No. 4 Delta to a dominant straight-set victory over No. 13 Carbon, marking a decisive 3-0 win in the 3A first round. King led the Rabbits with 21 kills, while Sage King and Daijah Willoughby contributed nine kills apiece. Javree Duston chipped in with four aces, bolstering Delta’s performance. The Rabbits clinched each set with scores of 25-19, 26-24, and 25-19, demonstrating control throughout the match and securing their advancement in the postseason.

Union 3, Manti 0

No. 5 Union’s Rowen Weaver spearheaded the Cougars with a dominant performance, tallying 24 kills to lead her team to a straight-set victory over No. 12 Manti in the 3A Playoffs. The Cougars won decisively with set scores of 25-6, 25-19, and 25-20. Sariah White contributed to the victory with three aces, while Aliah Martin added 19 digs to solidify Union’s defensive efforts.

Canyon View 3, Emery 0

No. 2 Canyon View soared to a dominant straight-set victory over No. 15 Emery in the 3A Playoffs, winning 25-14, 25-12, 25-12. Kambree Potter led the Falcons with nine kills, while Kiersten Attig contributed eight. The Falcons’ aggressive serving was on full display, as they recorded 12 aces in the match. Emery struggled to keep pace, unable to win more than 14 points in any set.

Richfield 3, Layton Christian 1

No. 7 Richfield Wildcats secured a spot in the 3A quarterfinals with a 3-1 victory over No. 10 Layton Christian. Jerzy Moon led the charge for Richfield with 19 kills, providing a consistent scoring threat throughout the match. Adrie Seely orchestrated the offense with 38 assists while also contributing four aces, creating significant challenges for the Eagles. Layton Christian managed to claim the second set with a score of 25-16, but Richfield rebounded strongly, closing out the match with consecutive 25-23 wins in sets three and four.

Morgan 3, Logan 0

In a dominant display by No. 3 Morgan, Brynlee Hanson’s remarkable serving performance highlighted a decisive 3-0 victory over No. 14 Logan in the 3A first round. Hanson opened the match with an impressive 20 consecutive service points in the first set. Norah Komenda and Ruby Cameron also played pivotal roles, helping Morgan secure set scores of 25-6, 28-26, and 25-10.

Ogden 3, Providence Hall 0

No. 6 Ogden’s Tigers swept No. 11 Providence Hall in the 3A first round with scores of 25-18, 27-25, 25-19. Lauretta Taylor led Ogden with a dominant performance, registering 14 kills, five blocks, and five digs. Taylor Duke contributed seven kills and 12 digs to bolster the Tigers’ defense. After a closely contested second set, Ogden maintained their momentum to secure the match in three sets, ending Providence Hall’s postseason aspirations.
