The storylines at Tuesday’s 2A state meet at Sugar House Park were wildly different. While one team continued its dynasty with a fifth straight state championship, another ended a two-and-half decade drought.
North Summit’s girls placed five runners in the top 10 at state for the second straight season as they ran away from the 2A field for another title.
North Sevier, meanwhile, beat San Juan by 14 points to claim its first state title since 1997. Millard finished third in its quest for a sixth straight state championship.
North Sevier finished tied with Millard last year, but settled for second in the sixth-runner tiebreaker. Coach Barry Smith acknowledges that was motivation for Tuesday’s success.
“It put the pressure on us for sure, but it fed us too. We got close enough we knew what we missed out on,” Smith said. “We had a lot of depth. We have a couple of kids that didn’t get run today, that might could have been our top five, just depending on the week.”

Cruze Hallows led the way for North Sevier finishing in first place a year after a runner-up finish to Millard senior Ben Ralphs. Hallows was the senior this time around and he said there was definitely a mentality difference between the two years.
“As a junior, you’ve got another year senior, you’re done after this, so you’re just gonna leave it all out there. You’re not going to race like you got another year, it’s your last time to run, so you’re going to give it everything,” Hallows said.
Hallows finished with a time of 16:19.04, with San Juan’s Platte Lyman finishing in second with a 16:35.4, and Kanab’s Levi Clarkson in third with a 16:38.96.
North Sevier’s second-best individual finish belonged to Lincoln Hallows, who finished in sixth place. All five runners placed in the top 30 this year as the Wolves finished with 76 points, one less than it did in last year’s heartbreaking runner-up finish.
San Juan boys finished in second place with 90 points, followed by Millard in third with 96.
Smith said Hallows’ leadership from the front was a big part of the team’s success.
“He’s full leadership, but we’ve got a team full of leaders, which is really nice. We’ve got kids that lead out different weeks. But he’s definitely led us in our workouts, led us in a lot of the theory of what we’re doing. So yeah, he’s, he’s been very essential,” Smith said.
Just as depth was the key for North Sevier, so it was for North Summit’s fifth straight title.
The Braves didn’t have a finisher in the top two, but Chayden Sargent finished third, Thea Sargent sixth, Audrey Moore seventh, Isabell Sargent ninth and Kinsey Moore 10thin another well-rounded team performance.
“I mean, this just really doesn’t come along that often, to be able to have these girls the last couple years, be able to do what they have been able to do,” said North Summit coach Dave Peck. “I’m just so proud of the girls and their effort. Some of the other teams probably thought that maybe it might be their chance, but boy, these girls just stepped up and were able to get that job.”
North Summit finished with a team score of 35 points, with second-place Grand tallying 62 points. Kanab finished with 92 points, its highest-team finish in school history.
For Kanab senior Kenidee Glazier, that team finish was nearly as exciting as her individual state championship. It was the first time Glazier has run with a full team of runners at the state meet.
Glazier ran from the front the entire race, with the UVU commit winning with a time of 18:51.11. Grand’s Elliet Johnson-Trim finished second in 19:08.79.
The title was the second of Glazier’s career: she also won as a freshman. She finished second, however, each of the past two state meets, and she’s been extremely focused all season to avoid a similar finish.
“I knew it was my last one, and I knew that if it came down to it, I was going to out-sprint anyone here. So I was ready for that. I was ready to have a fight, since I wasn’t really prepared the other two years, but I was glad that I got here and it was gonna be mine. Like, I wanted it back more than anything,” Glazier said.
Reflecting on the difference between winning as a freshman and then a senior, Glazier said the mentality has changed so much.
“I feel like I’ve definitely matured a lot,” she said. “I learned that sometimes placing isn’t all that matters, and sometimes the time isn’t all that matters, but the journey that gets you there, and I love the whole experience.”
