Mountain View boys, Park City girls claim 4A state cross country titles

With four new runners on the varsity team this year a fifth consecutive state cross country title for Mountain View was anything but a certainty when the season began in August.

When the dust had cleared from Tuesday’s state championship race at Sugar House Park, the Bruins boys were led by top-10 finishes from Kyle Chimpan (2nd), Maverik Dutson (3rd) and Wyatt Jeppson (6th), as they scored 44 points to edge Pine View (57) and Orem (87).

“It was pretty awesome,” Mountain View coach Mike Strauss said. “We had four kids that hadn’t run varsity this year and so that’s a lot to shift that entire varsity team and carry that tradition on your shoulders and carry that all season and still come through on a day like today.”

The Bruins were led by Chipman, a junior who covered the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes and 23.56 seconds.

“It just makes me super proud that I get to uphold this legacy that the people before me own and that five in a row is just crazy,” Chipman said.

Mountain View has won the last three 4A state titles and two previous titles while running in the 5A classification.

After winning their division title, the Park City girls emerged as a Class 4A contender. The Miners delivered on the big stage Tuesday, led by a second-place finish from Tatum Finch. Park City claimed the 4A state title with 108 points, just ahead of Deseret Hills (112) and Cedar (126).

“We had a race plan and it didn’t go to perfect but at the end we got it,” Park City coach Steve Cuttitta said. “At the second mile we were behind by 18 points and we knew it was going to be an uphill climb but our girls, one through seven, really battled it out.”

After finishing third in the 4A race a year ago, Orem’s Peter Mecham won Tuesday’s boys individual race, covering the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes and 20.78 seconds. Mecham jumped out to a huge early lead and was passed by Chipman late in the race before surging ahead in the race’s final meters.

“I thought for sure he had me when he got ahead of me,” Mecham said. “I thought I didn’t have it but I dug deep and I’m really pleased with my efforts.”

Mountain View’s Maverik Duston (15:29.76), Pine View’s Mason Gertsch (15:36) and Pine View’s Trevor Prior (15:42.76) rounded out the top-5 individuals.

A year ago, Highland’s Madelyn Reeder finished 6th in the 5A state meet. With a solid season of training behind her and a move down to 4A, Reeder won Tuesday’s girls race with a time of 17 minutes and 28.20 seconds.

“I trained really hard in the offseason and I feel like I improved a lot this year,” Reeder said. “With about 800 meters to go, I told myself this is it I really need to kick it. I tried really hard but it is always so hard at the end.”

Finch finished as the runner-up (17:28) while Orem’s Kate Adams (18:15) was third. Timpanogos junior Anna Bliss finished fourth (18:29) while Cedar’s Eliza Johnson was fifth (18:32).
