Maple Mountain’s Logan Rohatinsky loves football, and there was a time when he envisioned that would be his sport of choice in high school.
Running’s in his blood though, and he’s starting to following in the footsteps of his dad, Josh Rohatinsky — the only four-time boys cross country state champion as he won titles at Provo from 1996 to 1999.
The Maple Mountain junior pulled away from Northridge’s Jeff Hazard in the final 400 meters on Wednesday during the 5A state championship meet at Sugar House Park to claim the individual state title. He finished 12th as a sophomore a year ago.
“My dad’s honestly probably the biggest reason where I am today. He’s really brought me along over the years. He’s kind of the reason that I started running. I had other interests,” he said.
His performance also helped Maple Mountain capture the 5A team title after previously winning in 2023. The fact that the Golden Eagles did so without their injured No. 2 runner made the championship that much more impressive.
“These guys have won every race against 5A teams this year, but you’re running on the Sugar House Park course with a lot of great competition, and anytime it falls your way, you just got to feel grateful,” said Maple Mountain coach Brett Andrus. “We had guys score today that haven’t scored before, and made sure that we finished the job that we were trying to do the whole year.”
Ironically enough, Andrus ran against Rohantinsky’s dad in high school and then was teammate of his at BYU.
“One of the things about Logan that I’m most impressed with is that throughout this season, he’s established himself as a dominant runner really in the vein that his dad used to be,” Andrus said. “One of the things about his dad, you could always tell he was in a lot of pain, but he could go deeper. And Logan does work hard, he’s in good shape, but the difference this season is that when he’s racing, he’s in a deep, deep place that very few other people can go.”
That helped him pull away in the final quarter mile to win the 5A title with a time of 15:13.67.
He was one of two Maple Mountain runners to finish in the top 10. Riley Thorpe finished in seventh place to help the Golden Eagles to a team score of 86. Wasatch finished second with 138 points.
After finishing fifth last season, Andrus was proud of the way his team fought at this year’s state meet while definitely not at 100%.
“Last year we felt like we were a team who should have competed better than we did. We came here and took fifth, and so to get back on top again at this course, which is so much more difficult than the other courses. I think it’s just a step forward in us being consistent year in and year round,” Andrus said.
Maple Mountain ultimately ran away with the title for the 52-point win, but the girls’ team race on Wednesday was much, much closer. Ultimately, Springville’s depth pushed it past Viewmont for the program’s sixth state championship in the past eight years.
The Red Devils finished with 79 points, followed by Viewmont with 88 points and Box Elder with 97 points.
“We knew we had a shot, and we made a race plan and just gave it all we had hoped that would be enough. But we knew we were in the running and it was going to be close,” said Springville coach Valerie Bodily. “Every single one of them had to show up and race their best if we wanted to win.”
Springville’s top two runners were seniors Anna Kent in eighth place and Maya Boyer in 11th. Bodily said they were the catalysts to outstanding team unity this season.
“This is my 12th year coaching, and this is probably the hardest-working and closest girls team. They encourage each other, they pull each other, they don’t let each other drop, and they just work so hard as a team unit, instead of just separate individuals. And I think that team unity and that hard work all together is what pushed them to this point,” Bodily said.
Springville’s coach said that her team’s fifth runner, senior Siena Francom, was feeling a lot of pressure knowing how important her score was to the team title. You never would’ve known based on her critical 26th-place finish.
“She just blew it out of the water. Crushed it,” Bodily said.
As expected, Timpview senior Lily Alder ran away with the individual title as she won with a 45-second cushion.
Alder finished with a time of 17:27.74, followed by Brighton sophomore Bridget Smith, who crossed the line in 18:12.06.
Alder finished second to teammate Jane Hedengren at last year’s state meet, but with Hedengren’s graduation, Alder is the one dominating 5A this season. The senior was pleased with how she ran on Wednesday knowing she was the heavy favorite.
“I’m proud of my effort level. I think it’s really easy if you’re at a good level to just kind of relax. Just maintaining a good push throughout the whole race. I think it’s pretty hard to just stay in it when you’re up there. But I think I stayed in it for a good amount,” Alder said.
Alder will be racing in bigger national meets in the months ahead, and she believes her performance at the state meet was a great step in the right direction.
“I think it just proves we’re in a good spot. And I’m just excited to keep training for these bigger meets in December, just kind of train up to it. I’m not at the highest peak level I can be,” she said.
