As the 5A boys and girls wrestling season gets underway this week, Spanish Fork’s boys and Wasatch’s girls will both be chasing 3-peats, and both the teams to beat.
Both garnered the most votes in the Deseret News 5A preseason coaches rankings to open the season ranked No. 1.
Seven of Spanish Fork’s state placers were underdogs a year ago as they’re in a good position to keep their recent strong tradition going. With Pleasant Grove dropping down from 6A and Payson bumping up from 4A, there will certainly be an uptick in quality in 5A this season.
Box Elder was runner-up to Spanish Fork a year ago, and it was projected to finished second again in the preseason rankings.
Wasatch’s girls had nine underclassmen state placers a year ago on its way to the 5A repeat, including a pair of state champs.
Last year’s 5A girls runner-up, Cedar Valley, is now wrestling in 6A, which opens the door for a new top challenger to Wasatch. Who that top challenger will be is very much up in the air as the voting for No. 2 in the preseason rankings was very tight between Box Elder, Salem Hills, Hillcrest and Northridge.
