Millard’s quest for a fifth straight 2A boys wrestling state championship won’t be a walk in the park this season.

In extremely tight voting from 2A coaches in the Deseret News preseason rankings, Beaver narrowly finished first ahead of Millard after finishing runner-up to the Eagles at last year’s state tournament.

Of Millard’s 19 state placers last year, eight were seniors as the Eagles have some big holes to fill. Conversely, only three of Beaver’s 18 state placers were seniors.

Similarly in 1A, Panguitch’s push for a seventh straight state title will be far from easy. In fact in the coaches preseason projections, the Bobcats are pegged at No. 3 behind Altamont and Milford.

Of Panguitch’s 12 state placers a year ago, eight were seniors as the program will be relying on a lot of new faces this season.

For Altamont, only two of its 11 state placers a year ago were seniors.

In the combined 2A/1A girls preseason rankings, two-time state champ Duchesne is the favorite to 3-peat this season based on coaches preseason voting.

Enterprise and Rich finished second and third respectively to Duchesne last season, and that’s the same order of the preseason rankings this season.

Of Duchesne’s nine state placers a year ago, seven were underclassmen.
