Arizona just helped BYU in a major way.

With the Wildcats’ rivalry win over No. 20 Arizona State Friday night, the Cougars have officially clinched a spot in next week’s Big 12 championship game.

Now, no matter what happens in its Saturday matchup with UCF, BYU has a guaranteed trip to Arlington to compete for the league title next Saturday.

Additionally, the Cougars’ Big 12 championship opponent is now confirmed, and it’s a familiar foe.

BYU will face off with Texas Tech once again, having fallen 29-7 to the Red Raiders in Lubbock on Nov. 8. The stakes will be higher than ever in the rematch, with the winner earning an automatic College Football Playoff bid.

This will be BYU’s first conference championship game appearance since 1998, when the Cougars lost the WAC title to Air Force in 20-13 fashion.

BYU’s last conference championship was 2007 in the Mountain West, though there was no league title game back then.

The Cougars and Red Raiders will face off in the Big 12 championship game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas on Dec. 6 at 10 a.m. MST.
