Through 11 games this season, BYU has recorded 41 dunks.
But arguably the most memorable throwdown of the year just came from the Cougars’ head coach.
On his coach’s show on BYUtv this week, Kevin Young was surprised to see a “never before broadcast” clip of himself showcasing his hops on the court.
The video was shown by host Greg Wrubell, displaying Young in a church cultural hall pulling off a backwards dunk and casually celebrating afterward.
“That was definitely a few years ago, but I’ll take it,” Young said laughingly. “I hope that makes the circuit on the internet. Let’s go, get that viral.”
According to Young, the video was filmed about 10 years ago at a church building in his wife’s hometown of Omaha, Nebraska, as a result of his father-in-law “questioning” his athleticism.
But such an explanation was clearly tongue in cheek, as Young played college basketball in the NAIA and Division II ranks for Middle Georgia and Clayton State, respectively.
As for his current dunking ability, Young said he dunked a volleyball at the Marriott Center annex last year — inviting Wrubell to play that video for the next show — and expressed optimism in still being able to do the same with a basketball.
“I wouldn’t put it past me,” Young said.
Young and the Cougars will face Abilene Christian Friday night at 7:30 p.m. at the Marriott Center.
