BYU women’s basketball just scored its most impressive win of the young Lee Cummard era.

The Cougars rode a second half rally to upset previously undefeated Arizona State 71-62 Saturday at the Marriott Center in Provo, moving to 13-2 on the season and 2-1 in Big 12 play.

“I loved the moxie, the swag our team played with today and the energy they had as a group,” Cummard said postgame. “I loved the defense in the third quarter. More than anything, I really loved seeing the ball go through the net on some of those bingo 3s in the second half, where we got offensive rebounds and capitalized on them.

“Overall, this was a tough game, and it will be a tremendous battle playing them out in Tempe in a couple of weeks.”

After trailing by six points at halftime, BYU finished the night on a 43-28 surge in the second half to stun a Sun Devils squad that was riding a 15-game win streak to open the season.

BYU’s 71 points scored was the second-highest total allowed by Arizona State thus far in the season.

Delaney Gibb led the Cougar charge with 18 points, eight rebounds and three assists, while freshman Sydney Benally added 16 points, five rebounds and three more assists.

Though BYU only shot 38% from the field and coughed up 26 turnovers, the Cougars earned their victory by dominating on the glass.

Cummard’s group grabbed more offensive rebounds (26) than Arizona State had total boards (25), with BYU ending the contest with a grand total of 54 rebounds, led by 11 from Kambree Barber and eight from both Gibb and Bolanle Yussuf.

With the win, BYU has already matched its 2024-25 win total (13), only needing 15 games to do so compared to 30 last season.

The Cougars will now head on the road for matchups with Arizona and Houston next week. Upon returning to Provo, BYU will face currently-ranked foes in No. 22 Baylor and No. 21 Texas Tech.
