This month, college basketball website The Field of 68 has been releasing the results of polls ranking how coaches (head coaches and assistants) in the different conferences around the country view how good or not the head coaching jobs are in their conference.
On Thursday, the Big 12 poll was released. As site founder Jeff Goodman wrote, “There are no specific parameters. Each coach was able to utilize their own specific parameters to determine their list from top to bottom.
“However, while recruiting base and facilities were a major factor when I did a similar exercise in 2018, now it’s obviously financial resources (NIL) that are paramount.”
BYU is No. 4 in the Big 12 rankings, while Utah is No. 14 in the 16-team league.
Ahead of BYU are Kansas, Arizona and Texas Tech, and behind Utah are UCF and Colorado.
Goodman shared some responses from coaches about the top three and also Colorado.
Regarding Kansas, one respondent wrote, “(Kansas head coach) Bill Self has done an incredible job, but it’s also hard to screw things up at Kansas. I don’t think anyone can fail with everything they have over there.”
Resources was also the same reason that coaches voted for Arizona and Texas Tech, and the lack of them is why they voted for Colorado at the bottom.
“There’s no recruiting base, they have bottom-tier resources, now you have (head football coach Deion Sanders) soaking up all the money and I’m just not sure they really care,” one respondent wrote of Colorado.
“(Head men’s basketball coach) Tad Boyle is a really good coach to do what he’s done there.”
