An experienced veteran is coming to BYU’s defensive secondary.

Mississippi State cornerback Jayven Williams is transferring to the Cougars, he announced Friday via social media.

Williams marks the first commit for new BYU cornerbacks coach Demario Warren, who was announced to be joining Kelly Poppinga’s defensive staff last week.

In 13 games at Mississippi State this past season, Williams made 18 total tackles with two forced fumbles and an interception of then-Arizona State quarterback Sam Leavitt.

Prior to his time with the Bulldogs, Williams spent three years at Kennesaw State, where he appeared in 24 games and made five starts at corner while also handling some kick and punt return duties.

Standing at 6-foot-2 and hailing from Mobile, Alabama, Williams will have one final season of eligibility in Provo, where he will play alongside BYU’s returning secondary pieces in Evan Johnson, Faletau Satuala, Tre Alexander and others.

Williams is the third defensive player to join the Cougars this offseason, along with linebackers Cade Uluave and Jake Clifton.
