While the 2025-26 college football season just ended on Monday night, the Big 12 will release the conference schedule for the 2026-27 campaign on Wednesday morning.
On Tuesday evening ahead of its release, ESPN’s Pete Thamel reported a few tidbits that could be of interest to fans of the conference in general and of the BYU Cougars specifically.
First, Thamel reported that the conference championship game will be moved from Saturday to Friday night at 8 p.m. EST (6 p.m. MST) and be played on December 4.
In the 2025-26 season, BYU and Texas Tech played in the conference championship game early on Saturday, December 6, with Texas Tech winning 34-7.
Speaking of the Cougars and Red Raiders, Thamel also reported Tuesday that the two sides will not face each other in the regular season in 2026, meaning the first time they could face each other would be the conference title game.
Prior to the conference title game in the 2025-26 season, BYU and Texas Tech played on November 8, with the Red Raiders winning 29-7.
The two sides did not face each other in the 2024 season but did in 2023, the Cougars’ first season in the Big 12.
BYU won that game, 27-14.
Thamel also reported Tuesday that Texas Tech will face Arizona State at home in Week 7 of the 2026 season.
The full 2026 Big 12 football schedule is set to be announced Wednesday at 9 a.m. MT.
