The Canyon View girls wrestling team capped off two days of intense competition Thursday evening, securing its third consecutive state wrestling championship at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.

As the defending state champions, Canyon View’s wrestlers knew they would have plenty to overcome.

“Every poll this whole year had us third or fourth,” head coach Travis Carter said. “We just did our thing and wrestled hard.”

Leading up to the state tournament, Canyon View won its divisional bracket. After the first day of state competition, however, the Falcons found themselves locked in a dead heat with Grantsville and Juab.

“We were really close, but we were able to pull away today,” Carter said. “Winning the championship is nice, but seeing the love and camaraderie they have for each other far outweighs that.”

“We treat these girls like our daughters,” said Carter, who is in his third year as the head coach. “Girls are unique, but they’re much easier to coach (than boys). They listen, and they do what you ask of them.”

Carter had two of his own daughters on the mat helping lead the Falcons, and both claimed individual state championships in their respective weight classes.

Nellie Carter (155) earned her title with a third-round pin over Carbon’s Rickelle Collins.

“I knew it was going to be an important match, and I knew I had to wrestle well,” Nellie Carter said. “I went out there, did my thing and came out on top.”

Gemma Carter (135), a senior, went the full six minutes to defeat Manti’s Summer Rowley in the championship bout. Although Gemma entered the tournament as a returning state champion, a third-place finish at divisions made a repeat uncertain.

“I knew it was going to be tough,” she said. “I played it safe, and it worked out. It took a lot of extra practice to turn it around.”

Gwendaline Gardiner (145) delivered Canyon View’s third individual championship, outlasting Richfield’s Emma Moriarty in a hard-fought decision.

“This is my first time winning the championship,” said Gardiner, a senior who said she was inspired to wrestle by her father, brother and grandfather, all of whom competed in the sport.

“There’s just a great environment,” Gardiner said. “The team is like my second family.”

She credited her coaches and her father for pushing her to improve and teaching her the importance of wanting it more on the mat.

“This is great,” Gardiner said. “It shows the underclassmen what can happen when you work hard.”
