High school boys wrestling: Juab continues dynasty with 10th straight state title (+photo gallery)

It takes more than practice, sweat and grit to build a wrestling dynasty.

The Juab boys wrestling squad capped off its 10th consecutive state championship Thursday night at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield.

“It really takes a community to be able to do this and give those kids something to perform for,” coach Joel Holman said. “I think the state wrestling tournament is the greatest sporting event hosted by the (Utah) High School Activities Association. The highs are the highest, and the lows are the lowest.”

Juab racked up 277.5 team points en route to the title, with Canyon View finishing runner-up with 232 points and Morgan in third with 165.

Outside of Juab’s triumph, one of the top stories of the night belonged to Union’s Tucker Roybal, who wrapped up his career with a remarkable fourth individual state title. He won his championship match by technical to finish the year with a 47-1 record.

For Juab, of the seven wrestlers that advanced to the finals, two earned individual state titles.

Kaden Martineau (150) delivered Juab’s first individual title of the tournament with a win by fall over Union’s Rowdy Roybal and Ladd Holman (190) picked up the team’s other individual title, pinning Emery’s Hazen Meccariello in just 48 seconds.

“I came in feeling pretty confident,” Martineau said. “I knew I just had to come in and do my stuff.”

Martineau said being part of the championship team is an incredible experience.

“It’s awesome to be part of this. Everyone here is so electric,” he said. “Wrestling is just part of my life. Without it, I don’t know where I’d be.”

Added Ladd Holman, the coach’s son: “It was fun for me, but it’s even more fun to be part of the team. It’s special to be here. Wrestling helped me reach some goals, but also deal with some setbacks.”

A junior, this marks his third consecutive state title, and he said the coaching staff, including his dad, are some of his best friends.

The finals began with Carbon’s Jantz Greenhalgh earning a third-round pin over Juab’s Jack Holman in the 106-pound division. Canyon View’s Jaxten Bowler edged Juab’s Trevor Cowan with a 5–4 decision at 113, while Union’s Grady Roybal won a 17–10 decision over Juab’s Jet Abbott.

“There’s always going to be disappointment, but hopefully they learn not only to do hard things, but to do them with class and integrity,” Joel Holman said. “You represent yourself, your program and your community.”

At 138, Carbon’s Riker Ohearon defeated Juab’s Drake Johnson by decision.

“What stood out for me is that most everyone on the backside took third place,” Holman said. “I’m proud of the guys who took their loss, shook it off and came back to score points for the team.”

Holman also expressed appreciation for the support the team receives from the Juab community, including donations, countless volunteer hours and a sea of crimson shirts filling the cheering section.

“People know when we’re doing well,” he said. “It’s important because if you feel like no one cares, it’s easy to give up on yourself.

“When you know the community is behind you, watching and wanting you to succeed, you don’t want to let them down.”

Beyond the wins on the mat, Holman said he hopes his athletes understand they represent more than just a high school wrestling team.

“Wrestling teaches the lessons of sports better than any other sport because it’s harder than any other sport,” he said. “Juab is a wrestling town, and now we have kids in the program who have never known Juab not to be a wrestling town.

“That’s pretty cool for them.”
