Heading into the 2A boys wrestling finals Saturday evening, the South Summit Wildcats were in a strong position, but defending champion Millard pushed them every step of the way.

South Summit captured its first team championship since 2016, finishing with 288 team points. Millard followed with 272 points, while Beaver placed third with 250.5.

It’s a trophy coach Brach Pulver has been chasing for 25 years.

“We’ve been swinging for this for a long time across five different states,” said Pulver, who has been coaching at South Summit since 2017.

The finals began with South Summit holding a team-point total of 278.5, ahead of Millard’s 247 and Beaver’s 245.5.

But Millard’s Trayl Moat (113) scrapped together an 11-9 decision over South Summit’s Tuff Thornton. Porter Dahl (120) also won a finals match for Millard, as did Lane Monroe (126) with a 33-second pin.

Two more Millard wins came from Christian Briceno (132) over South Summit’s Ryland Teeples and Cal Bray (138) against Riggin Crittenden, pulling Millard to within six and a half points.

That’s when South Summit’s Zane Winter (150) delivered a technical fall over Beaver’s Caleb Carter.

“It was an amazing match,” Winter said. “We’d wrestled at divisionals, so this was a bit of a rematch. He really impressed me. Congratulations to him as well.”

Winter’s win added valuable points to the team standings and helped solidify the team trophy for South Summit.

“This was his first one, and he’s been an absolute beast this year,” Pulver said of Winter. “These kids have worked through a lot of adversity this year.”

Steele Woodward (157) also captured an individual title, winning a 3-1 decision over Beaver’s Alexander Williams.

“It was a really tough match,” Woodward said. “I was able to take him down in the second, but he escaped, and it was just defense from there. We both had really good defense.”

Woodward is a freshman.

“Just getting a freshman to the finals is a big deal, and for him to come through and win it like that was huge,” Pulver said.

Trayvn Boger (285) capped off both his senior year and the team championship by winning the final match of the night over ALA’s Jesus Lopez.

“That’s the second time I’ve seen him this year, and I knew he liked to scrap,” Boger said. “I just picked up my pace and wrestled my style.”

Winning a team title is something Boger said he’s wanted since he started wrestling.

“It’s just a dream come true to finally win it with my team,” Boger said. “I just love the sport and want to see it continue to grow.”

Boger’s wrestling career is set to continue at Northwestern.

“He’s just been tough his whole career,” Pulver said of Boger. “I’m proud of each of these guys. You just have to keep swinging.”
