The end result was never in doubt, and Layton continued to add to its legacy by achieving a 4-peat, winning the 6A state championship with final score of 300 on Thursday.
The Lancers finished 73 points ahead second place Corner Canyon, while Syracuse finished a distant third with a score of 194.5.
“I am feeling really grateful,” said Layton head coach Adam Fager. “I think it’s really one of the best senior classes we’ve ever had. It was exciting to see all of the hard work and dedication from the boys pay off.
“We have some younger wrestlers that needed some development, and to see how the seniors and older leaders got the job done is really good for their development.”
Helping to lead Layton to victory were seniors Elijah Hawes and Austin Paris.
Going for the individual 4-peat, Paris, wrestling in the 157-pound weight class, defeated his opponent by way of a fall after going up 14-0 in the second period.
“It’s weird to think that I’ve never lost a state championship. It’s always been my dream to be a four-timer, and I guess it came true for sure,” Paris said.
“I’ve also always wanted to win a team title and coming here really helped with that goal.”
Layton didn’t feel much pressure throughout the tournament and used the energy from the crowd to help push it forward with each match.
“All of us just like to feed off of momentum,” Paris said. “Our crowd helps us a ton, and knowing that we have the best coaches in the state helps, too.
“Thinking about all of that just makes you want to win it all even more.”
Wrestling in the 190-pound weight class, Hawes was overcome with emotion after defeating his opponent in his final match of his high school career.
“The fact that it was the last match of the season hit me right after I got that win,” he said. “It made me realize that it was kind of the end of the beginning.
“I’m going to go off and wrestle in college now and the emotions just took over. I wasn’t expecting it in myself but it was just powerful.”
Hawes knows he’s learned some valuable things that he can take with him into the next wrestling chapter of his life.
“I just want to go out and wrestle like I always do,” he said. “Going off to college now, I have realized that the best thing I can do is just to be myself. Just know who I am and wrestle how I know how to wrestle.”
Layton has been unstoppable for several years now, and Fager knows his team can continue the success as long as wrestlers continue to buy into what the coaches are teaching them.
“The number of kids that we have that want to wrestle in college is really awesome,” he said. “Whether or not they end up doing it is beside the point, but the fact that they are so willing to buy into what I ask them to do is incredible.
“It’s cool to see all of the leadership on the team and to see how big of a difference that makes. When you enjoy what you do it makes things a lot easier.”
Also achieving a milestone of his own was Layton’s Noah Bull, who became a 3-peat champion by defeating Cohen Earl via pin.
