It was the same old dominant story for Uintah in 2026.
For the sixth straight year, Uintah can call itself the 4A state boys wrestling champion, as it finished the championships Saturday with a final score of 273.5.
The next closest team was Timpanogos at 199 and Ridgeline finished in third with a 153.5.
“I have 55 guys in my room and it’s the best from top to bottom,” said Uintah head coach Phillip Keddy. “It’s a complete room with everybody looking to improve and get better.
“I think the fact that we qualified 28 guys for the state tournament, which is the most you can qualify, shows the quality of wrestlers that we have on the team.”
Four Uintah wrestlers won individual state championships — Gavin Decol, Nixon Canfield, Ethan Sharp and Maddax Hacking.
For Hacking, winning his 132-pound weight class not once but twice was goal that he has been striving for a while.
“It’s incredible that I can call myself a 2-time champ,” Hacking said. “My dad only won once so I’ve been pushing to be better than him. My grandpa also wrestled. Wresting has always run in the family.”
Keddy experienced a roller coaster of emotions. For as much as he enjoyed celebrating his wrestlers’ victories, he was just as heartbroken for the wrestlers who came up just short of their goals.
“It’s a really good feeling. Wrestling tournaments, especially state championships, are a weird feeling. It’s sort of mixed feelings because you go through the highs and lows with all of the guys,” said Keddy.
“The team title feels great, but you still kind of have these aches and pains for these kids that didn’t finish on top, which is what they worked all year for.”
Keddy emphasized that while winning the state championship is always the goal, what is most important is getting the boys to be the best wrestlers they can be. Whether that means they win a state title or not is irrelevant.
“We talk a lot about how you can’t be complacent. Tat was the theme this season,” Keddy said. “You got go through these difficult things. We’re not trying to go undefeated. We’re trying to get every kid as good as they possibly can be.
“For some kids, that may not be a state championship. They may finish in fourth place, or their best might just be qualifying to get here. If everybody has that mentality, then I think they bring each other up in their progress of getting better.”
