The Duchesne girls wrestling team didn’t allow for a surprise this year as it captured its third straight state title at the Sevier Valley Center in Richfield on Saturday.

“What we really worked on this year was eliminating bad habits and becoming better wrestlers,” said Eagles assistant coach Curt Skewes.

Duchesne has been at the top of the heap of the 1A/2A girls state tournament since it started. However, that doesn’t mean it’s been easy, as the level of competition has continued to improve and grow each year, Skewes said.

“One of the things we have told our girls is because you have won it, you have a target on your back and everyone wants to get to where you are,” Skewes said. “We’ve got to continue to get better.”

For Duchesne, wrestling is about more than just learning how to win on the mat.

“This is about helping them learn to be better humans,” Skewes said. “This helps them learn that they can do hard things. This is hard. Wrestling is not for the timid.”

Duchesne finished the tournament, held entirely on Saturday, with 273 points. Enterprise nabbed second with 154, followed by San Juan with 125.5.

“We have girls on our team who have said their greatest accomplishment is wrestling,” Skewes said. “This is the greatest character builder there is.

“When we get home to Duchesne tonight, there’ll be a big party.”

Duchesne was led in part by Leah Ivie, who won the 105-pound championship match by fall over Enterprise’s Aspen Hall.

“I’m just so grateful to be here,” Ivie said. “I’m just so thankful for the opportunities to be here. I’m thankful for girls like Aspen who come out and wrestle so hard.”

While earning the individual championship was great, Ivie said helping with the team effort was more important.

“I’m so grateful for my team and everyone in there that pushes themselves every day,” Ivie said.

Junior Ariana Jones was Duchesne’s other state champion Saturday evening, as she was able to pin Panguitch’s Lainee Sawyer in the 130-pound individual championship bout.

“I kind of wrestled poorly at first because I was nervous, but I was able to come back,” Jones said. “Wrestling is everything to me.”

This is Jones’ second individual state championship, and third with the team.

“We all put in so much hard work and stay after hours,” Jones said. “Wrestling is pretty cool. More people should do it.”
