High school girls wrestling: Mountain Crest does just enough to win 4A championship

Mountain Crest was able to do just enough to take back the 4A girls wrestling championship on Saturday with a final team score of 195.5, a slim two points ahead of a Ridgeline team that was right on its tail all tournament who finished with a strong 193.5

Mountain Crest saw four wrestlers advance to the championship bracket, but all failed to win their matches. In contrast, Ridgeline went 4-0 in their championship matches, quickly cutting into the 11-point lead that Mountain Crest had after Day 1.

For Mountain Crest, it was more about the wrestlers winning their matches in the consolation bracket than anything else.

“We tell them that every one of them matters,” said Mountain Crest head coach Susan Dart. “Everyone makes the team better.

“We brought them together before the consolation rounds and told them about how we don’t win it in the championship bracket. We never have. It’s won in the consolation bracket, so go out and get it.”

Mountain Crest won four straight state titles from 2021-2024 before being dethroned last year. Dart believes that very well could have been a motivating factor through the season for her team.

“I think missing out on it last year lit a fire under the girls. They’ve worked hard all year and have felt like underdogs all year. Earned not given is what our theme was throughout the season,” said Dart.

“You gotta go out and win it. I just told them we don’t care whatever anyone else says or what everyone else thinks. You just go out there and win each match.”

Ridgeline’s comeback may have fallen just short this year, but there was still plenty to be proud of.

Kemrie Grange won her match in the 120-weight class and then looked on nervously as her sister Keagan wrestled and also won in the 125-pound class in a special moment for the Grange sisters.

“The first year I won she didn’t win so it was heartbreaking. To be able to see her win this year also and to know how much work she put in is such a special moment. It’s just amazing. She deserves it more than anyone,” said Kemrie Grange of her sister.

Snow Canyon’s Nia Hagler wrestled in the 135-pound weight class and finished her high school career in the best way possible by completing the 3-peat and winning her match via a fall in the first period against Green Canyon’s Marlie Giesey.

“There’s a lot of emotions going on right now,” Hagler said. “I’m a senior this year and no matter how long I have been wrestling, I still get nervous for every match. I have very high standards for myself, so I feel like everything was riding on this. I was undefeated for the whole season, and still going into my final match was very surreal.

“It’s very stressful no matter what. The way that I sort of keep my nerves in check is that I remind myself that nerves are a good thing. I also remind myself that I’ve already put in all the work up until this point, so now I just get to go out there, have fun and show people what I can do.”
