The team races at the boys and girls 4A state swim meet on Saturday couldn’t have been much different.
The boys team race came down to the final event, the 400-yard freestyle relay, where Mountain Crest put up its most clutch performance of the year and snatched victory over Park City for its first state title since 2013.
Meanwhile, consistent placement and strong relays from Park City’s girls throughout the meet gave the Miners a convincing state championship, their second in a row.
Last year, Park City reclaimed the throne after a seven-year drought. Miners coach Gadi Shamah said he hopes this is the beginning of yet another Park City dynasty.
“We’re hoping to keep it a dynasty right now,” Shamah said. “Hopefully we can stay on top. Glad to be back, and hopefully we can keep it running.”
The Miners got it done Saturday in the relays and through their sheer number of swimmers in the championship heats. They took first in both the 200 medley relay and the 200 freestyle relay, and took second in the 400 freestyle relay.
Lily Weinberg and Anna Klug were each part of both top-placing relays, and Park City had swimmers qualify for championship heats in every single event.
It also had at least two swimmers in all but two individual events.
“Our girls work hard,” Shamah said. “The culture on our team is amazing. They’ve actually killed it this season... We’re so proud of all the girls.”
Desert Hills took a distant second place, but had the swimmer of the meet in senior Chesney Bonner, as she repeated as state champion in the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke.
Bonner also helped Desert Hills win the 400 freestyle relay and took second in the 200 medley relay.
“I feel like our team has bound together so strongly that we all push each other to be better,” Bonner said. “We have such great parents and coaches who motivate us to do better and to keep fighting even when it gets hard.”
Provo’s Claire Pocock also defended her state title and became a two-time champion in the 200 individual medley.
“It feels really nice because I’ve been sick this week, and it’s just a really big accomplishment,” Pocock said. “It’s also my fastest time, and so it’s just been really fun.”
Back on the boys side, state meets do not get any closer than the race between Mountain Crest and Park City on Saturday.
The Mustangs took an early lead thanks to first-place finishes in the 200 medley relay and 200 individual medley by Brigham Skinner, but Park City fought back for the top spot as Logan Siegrist took first in both the 200 freestyle and 100 freestyle.
“It’s really a once-in-a-lifetime experience to have this opportunity to serve my teammates and just compete at such a high level,” said Siegrist. “It’s really exciting having it be this close.”
Momentum swung heavily into Park City’s favor following the 500 freestyle. Before the event, Mountain Crest held a 14-point lead over the Miners, but Park City took a 20-point lead after thanks to Harrison Bae, Joshua Ostrovsky and Jack Hurley all finishing in the top five of the event.
Park City further grew its lead with a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay. The Miners held a massive 68-point lead over the Mustangs, but Mountain Crest head coach Brian Kwant knew there were big opportunities to make up points in the final three events.
“After the 500, we knew that they would do well and that they’d be far ahead,” Kwant said. “We knew that they didn’t have a lot of kids in the fly or in the back or the breast, so we just told our kids, ‘You’ve got to pull ahead and step up.’”
Skinner stepped up big again for Mountain Crest and became a two-time champion in the 100 backstroke.
“I’m very happy,” said Skinner. “I really wanted the state record, but I’m happy with the work that I put in. It’s such a cool experience to be here and to be able to give my help.”
Mountain Crest’s Porter Copeland also helped pick up some much-needed points with a fifth-place finish in the 100 breaststroke.
As teams lined up for the 400 freestyle relay, the two-point margin between Park City and Mountain Crest was razor thin, but the Miners still had the edge and the Mustangs had a problem.
Park City was the favorite over Mountain Crest in the final event, and thus the state title. In Friday’s 4A preliminaries, Park City beat Mountain Crest by over three seconds.
In the final Saturday, both teams quickly pulled away from the pack and stayed in the front throughout. They each looked dead even heading down the final lap.
In the end, Mountain Crest saw a three-second improvement from its preliminary time and beat Park City by three one-hundredths of a second for its first state title in 13 years.
“It’s amazing to see them rise to the occasion,” Kwant said. “They’ve been chasing a state championship for so long. These seniors, when they were freshmen, saw this in front of them, and they just wanted to go after it.
“It’s just something that they’ve done all year and the four years that they’ve all been swimming together. They always step up to the occasion. They will always step up to the challenge that’s before them. It’s just unbelievable.”
Not only did Mountain Crest take the team championship, but Skinner was also named boys swimmer of the meet with four individual state titles (200 medley relay, 200 individual medley, 100 backstroke, 400 freestyle relay).
“I’m just thinking of how grateful I am to be able to swim with these guys for four years,” said Skinner. “They’re all awesome, and it was such an honor to be with them and have the win.”
