Utah Royals FC opened its 2026 home campaign on Sunday night at America First Field, hosting San Diego Wave FC in front of 9,778 fans on the Wasatch Front. The Royals delivered an energetic performance in their home opener, fueled by strong support from the home crowd.
Costly mistake puts Royals behind in home opener
Utah Royals FC came out aggressive in its home opener, nearly striking in the opening minute when Danish international Janni Thomsen fired a shot that sailed just over the bar, setting the tone early. However, a costly mistake shifted momentum in the 18th minute, after a misplaced pass from URFC captain Kate Del Fava was intercepted by San Diego’s Dudhina, who calmly slotted her shot first time into the bottom corner of an open net to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Despite the setback, goalkeeper Mia Justus delivered many key saves throughout the first half to keep Utah within reach. The Royals headed into halftime trailing, a situation historically difficult for the club, as Utah entered the match without earning a point when trailing at the break since the club’s return.
Debuting its new “Swarm” kits, URFC showed attacking intent throughout the half but were unable to capitalize, highlighting both their early energy and the fine margins that ultimately defined the opening 45 minutes.
Quotable
“It’s disappointing, because we know it’s unacceptable — this is a 90-minute game and we have to be better in those moments,” URFC attacker Cloé Lacasse said. “It’s frustrating for us and for the fans, but it’s something we’re addressing and will improve moving forward.”
Late drama: Prašnikar makes history, Wave strike late winner
Utah Royals FC saw multiple debuts spark life in the second half, highlighted by Haitian international Dayana Pierre-Louis making her URFC and NWSL debut, along with Utah native Courtney Brown earning their first minutes for the Royals. The Royals breakthrough came in the 66th minute, when Slovenian international Lara Prašnikar finished a clinical chance off a pass from Kiana Palacios, leveling the match at 1-1 whilst becoming the first Slovenian to score in NWSL history.
Momentum appeared to swing in Utah’s favor, but San Diego Wave FC capitalized late, as substitute Lia Godfrey found the back of the net in the 86th minute to restore the visitors’ lead. Despite a crucial stoppage-time save from Justus to keep the Royals within reach, Utah was unable to find a second equalizer.
The match featured a strong showing from several newcomers and milestone moments, but ultimately ended in heartbreak for the Royals.
