Panguitch’s boys and Rich’s girls won their respective 1A state championships on Saturday at the state track meet at BYU.
For Panguitch’s boys, it was their sixth straight state championship, while Rich’s girls won the 1A title for the second time in the past three years.

1A Championship storylines
Panguitch boys dominates 1A for sixth straight year
Panguitch’s culture of track success is alive and well after another great performance at the 1A state meet.
The Bobcats had athletes place in 13 of 16 events, including finishing with three individual winners and a relay winner as they rolled to a sixth straight 1A state championship at BYU.
Panguitch racked up 135 points to finish comfortably ahead of runner-up Rich’s 113 points.
“It’s a culture. We’re really lucky in Panguitch because we have no other sports that we have to compete against. So, I mean golf, but that’s just a handful of kids. It’s a culture, it’s a thing that the kids like to do, they enjoy it and it builds off of itself,” said head coach Troy Norris, who is retiring at the end of this school year.
That culture was obvious when it came to the number of kids who wanted to run in the 4x400 relay to end the meet.
“It’s fun when you got a group of kids and they all want to run the 4x4 at the end, because that doesn’t happen every day. Just such a good bunch of kids. Just gutsy, just a lot of heart and putting in the time and practice. Just fun to coach,” said Norris.
Panguitch had multiple athletes place in five events — 200 meters, 400 meters, 110 hurdles, 300 hurdles and the javelin.
Casey Walter was the lone multi-event winner for Panguitch as he finished first in the javelin and 200 meters.
Senior Max Albrecht was the Bobcats’ other individual winner as he finished first in the 300 hurdles after finishing runner-up in the 110 hurdles.
Only four of Panguitch’s state placers were seniors, so even though Norris is departing the program, it is loaded and ready to make a run at seven straight titles next year.
Paige Smith leads Rich to second 1A title in three years
Heading into the final race of the 1A meet, Rich only led Panguitch by three points. In an event that can get chaotic, the Rebels knew they needed to run a clean race and finish ahead of Panguitch in the process.
That’s exactly what Rich did, finishing second in the race behind Monticello to win its second 1A title in the past three years.
Rich finished the meet with 150 points, narrowly ahead of defending state champion Panguitch which finished with 144 points.
“We just had a few of the girls step up. We had a few girls that that were the ones expected to place, and they placed where they were supposed to,” said Rich coach Glenn Smith.
“And then we had a few girls that did a little better than we expected and kept us in the in the running, and so it was a lot of fun.”
While Paige Smith earned massive points for Rich by winning the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters, getting unlikely points from Carly England in the 100 hurdles and Whitley Payne in the 800 meters were just as critical to the team title.
The points those to picked up made all the difference.
None of would’ve mattered without Smith’s excellence though.
“She was she was spectacular. She just ran well, what she’s been doing all season and all basically through her high school years. She just worked hard and she ran well today, so she was rewarded for it,” said Smith.
Rich picked up points in 14 of the 16 events, which coach Smith said was a byproduct of approaching the meet the correct way.
“I just wanted the kids to enjoy it and have fun, and not put a lot of pressure on themselves at each of their events,” said Smith.

“It’s fun. I love the 800. Overall I think I did really good. I came in knowing that there was some Panguitch girls and they always give me a run for my money. No matter what, they’re here to race, so it’s really fun to race them. State’s like my favorite meet because I get to race the same people all four years. It’s so fun.”
