San Juan’s boys and North Summit’s girls won their respective 2A state championships on Saturday at the state track meet at BYU.
For the boys, San Juan halted a state title drought dating back to 1970 in the win.
North Summit’s girls, meanwhile, won a 10th straight state championship.
Here’s a look at some of the top storylines from this year’s meet.

2A Championship storylines
San Juan snaps 56-year title drought
To say that San Juan’s 2A boys track state title came out of nowhere would be an understatement. Prior to Saturday’s state meet at BYU, the only boys track title in school history came way back in 1970.
That boys track title in 1970 was the first state title in school history. The school has hoisted trophies 47 other times in eight other sports since that title, but none in boys track.
Everything changed this year, and in relatively dominant fashion.
San Juan racked up 109 team points to run away from runner-up Parowan’s 77 points.
“I just think they finally figured out that it’s a team sport. They supported each other. We were deep. We had five kids in the shot put final today and we had two others that could have could have easily been in there and scored. It’s just a good group of kids that’s competitive. They’ve worked hard from middle school on. They they lift weights, they’re friends. I think it’s just it’s truly a team unity thing that did it,” said San Juan coach Teagan Richmond.
A year ago San Juan had five athletes place in the top eight state as it finished seventh with 45 team points.
On Saturday, it had 17 individual placers in nine events. It also scored in all four relays.
It wasn’t until a couple weeks ago that San Juan started plugging numbers into a spreadsheet that the coaches thought a title could be possible to end its half-a-century drought.
“We kind of started looking at things and said, ‘We’ve got a real chance,’ and the kids just immediately got excited and bought in. We had kids willing to do some things that that they didn’t really want to do, or events they didn’t like doing, but they bought in. It’s been fun,” said Richmond.
San Juan’s lone individual winners were Cash Palmer in the shot put and Tripp Palmer in the high jump.
North Summit wins 10th straight state championship
North Summit’s girls track program is the most dominant track program in state history, and it added to that legacy on Saturday at BYU.
The Braves racked up 157 team points, well ahead of runner-up Grand’s 98 points, as they won their 25th state championship in school history and 10th straight.
The 25 titles is a state record, well ahead of second-place Panguitch’s 17 titles. The 10 consecutive titles is one shy of Mountain View’s state record of 11 straight (1994-2004).
“I just think that the group of seniors that we had were the ones that really helped us to make sure of this 10th win. They were just really, really important to our team, and I kind of want to give a shoutout to those seniors and what they did,” said North Summit coach Dave Peck, who’s been at the helm for seven of those 25 state titles.
Peck said depth is what really pushed North Summit to another state title.
North Summit picked up points in all 16 events, and in the 13 individual events it had multiple athletes place in the top eight in eight of them.
“I think that was just critical for us winning this championship where in each of the events we had somebody be able to compete and be on the podium,” said Peck.
The lone individual winners for the Braves were Kyla Wilde in the long jump and then Ellie Stephens in the shot put.
Peck said he was extremely proud of his 4x400 relay team that was comprised of all distance runners (Ava Sargent, Isabell Sargent, Chayden Sargent, Amy Tholen), but they still went out and finished first in the final race of the meet.
2A Multi-Event Winners
Kennadie Glazier, Kanab - 800, 1,600, 3,200 meters (2nd in 400)
“I was really nervous. I’ve never done all four of them before. I’ve always done like a relay or like a short sprint or something. So I wanted to do all four of them, and honestly, I did pretty much exactly what I thought I was going to do, and it ended up being super good. My legs, I was worried I wasn’t going to be in shape enough, but I was, and they carried me through, and I was really happy with how it went.”
Ruby Lurth, Beaver - 200, 400 meters, 100, 300 hurdles
“It’s been pretty good. Super dead after 300 and 400, back-to-back, but pretty good. I just want to go all out the entire time, and if I PR, then that’s great.”
Cooper Castle, South Sevier - 100, 200, meter, 4x100 relay
“It was pretty good. I didn’t get the times that I wanted, but it was alright. The nerves are definitely there. I threw up before my 100.”
Cruze Hallows, North Sevier - 1,600, 3,200 meters
Jensen Davies, Millard - 110, 300 hurdles
Tate Stubbs, Parowan - Long jump, 4x400 relay
Hannah Burgess, Grand - 4x100 relay, Sprint medley relay
