Emery’s girls and Richfield’s boys won their respective 3A state championships on Saturday at the state track meet at BYU.

For the boys, Richfield pulled ahead to win its state title on the final race of the meet the 4x400 relay.

Emery, meanwhile, won its first state title since 1979 as it overcame an injury to a key distance runner.

Here’s a look at some of the top storylines from this year’s meet.

3A Championship storylines

Richfield snaps Morgan’s three-year title streak

Heading into the final race of the 2026 state track meet, three-time state champion Morgan led Richfield by one point — 107-106. All the Trojans needed to do was finish ahead of Richfield in the final 4x400 relay to extend their title streak to four.

Richfield had other ideas.

The team of Briggs Mullen, Colton White, Jorgen Southwick and Branson Barney race to a runner-up finish behind Juab, with Morgan finishing fifth, as the Wildcats narrowly won their first state championship since 2022.

Richfield finished with 114 points, with Morgan runner-up with 111.

“It was pretty stressful, but I was glad it was that group of boys. Been able to rely on them all season and knew they’d get the job done,” said Richfield coach Jim Monsen.

Richfield’s coach said balance was the key as his team collected points in distance, sprints, jumps and field events all meet.

“They just all came and competed and put everything together and it took every single one of these boys and they just earned it,” said Monsen.

He said Southwick’s runner-up finish in the long jump was a big surprise and earned Richfield some huge points on Day 1 of the state meet on Friday.

Southwick also podiumed in the 100 and 200 meters. Not bad for an athlete competing in track for the first time.

In total, Richfield scored points in eight different individual events and all three relays. Richfield’s lone individual win came in the discus, with Luke Worley winning with a throw of 158′07.

Emery halts 46-year drought with convincing state championship

Seven months after winning its first-ever girls cross country state championship, Emery’s girls track team followed it up by snapping a 46-year state title drought.

Led by Skylee Guymon’s motivated performance after her sister was ruled out of the meet with a stress fracture the day before, Emery racked up an impressive 97 team points to capture the rare 3A state championship.

Canyon View finished second with 76 points, and Richfield right behind in third with 75 points.

“We basically all kind of banded together, sucked it up and got it done,” said coach Brett Guymon.

Addyson Guymon is Emery’s distance specialist, and would’ve been a lock for a top five finish in all three distance events. Without her, coach Guymon said numerous other athletes picked up the slack.

“I think we’ve got a team that has a great work ethic and they they just bond together really well and they’ve got a good attitude. I ask them to do something at practice, and you always fear that you’re asking too much. You don’t want to scare kids away, and they’re always looking for, ‘What can I do more? What can I do more?’ We have to kind of ask them to back off a little bit because they’re going too hard a lot of times, which makes it super nice,” said coach Guymon.

Skylee Guymon’s dominance went a long way toward picking up that slack, as she won four individual events and racked up 40 team points on her own.

Genry Christiansen was Emery’s other individual champ as she finished first in the 800 meters and then third place in the other two distance events.

3A Multi-Event Winners

Skylee Guymon, Emery - 200, 400 meters, 100, 300 hurdles

“I had a pre-warning that I was going to have to do the double with the 400 and the (300 hurdles) before, but it was kind of a little... I wanted to re-break my state record. But I’m lucky enough to run because my sister got a stress fracture, so she wasn’t able to run. So I’ve been thinking about her, just competing for both of us.”

Jaden Heap, Juab - 100, 200 meters, 4x100, 4x400 relay

“Oh, it’s really nostalgic, you know. I’m super excited, but now I’m kind of thinking I just did my last race. I’m like, ‘Wow, never going to run with my friends in high school again here,’ so it’s super sad kind of.”

“I signed with BYU just this last week, so I’ll be back here on my home turf.”

Lisa Richards, Union - high jump, long jump (3rd in 200 meters but a new school record)

“I got a new school record, so I was excited. (Other two) weren’t my best performance, but I got the job done, so I was excited I still won, so obviously that was amazing.”

Hunter Horrocks, Union - 800, 1,600, 3,200 meters

Ridge Olsen, Union - 400 meters, Sprint medley relay

Kenneth Whitmer, Morgan - 110 hurdles, Long jump

Triston Coleman, Juab - 4x100 relay, 4x400 relay
