High school girls soccer: Park City slips past Lone Peak in penalties in strong season-opening win

Park City hit the road and kicked off the season in impressive fashion on Tuesday afternoon.

The Miners, who opened the season ranked fifth in the Deseret News 4A preseason coaches poll, earned a massive victory over 6A preseason No. 1 Lone Peak in penalties.

After 1-1 scoreline in regulation and overtime, Park City keeper Marley Filippone was clutch in goal with two penalty saves as her team prevailed 4-1 from the spot.

“Lone Peak are obviously standard bearers in girls’ soccer in the state. They’re a program that has done what our program wants to do and last year they won a tightly contested match up in Park City late,” said Park City coach Anthony DiCicco. “Our girls learned they could play with them last August. Today’s win is a reminder that we can compete and beat anyone in the state.”

Both teams return four contributors from last season, and Tuesday’s game was a great measuring stick against quality competition.

Park City opened the scoring in the first half in the 33^rd minute on a goal from Elsa Dellenbach, assisted by Kelly Hough.

Dellenbach is one of the top returning attacking talents in 4A this season coming off a junior year in which she notched 16 goals and 13 assists.

Eight minute before the final whistle though and a shutout for Park City, Lone Peak equalized in the 72^nd minute on a goal by junior Sami Schiffman to send the game into OT. Macie Leavitt notched the assist on the Schiffman goal.

Schiffman scored four goals as a sophomore last season and is one of the top returning attacking threats for the 6A runner-ups from a year ago.

In the shootout, Park City went first and made its first four kicks from the spot with Dellenbach, Mallory Carter, Holder and Hailey Olsen all converting.

Filippone scored Lone Peak’s second and third attempts, as Olsen’s PK clinched the 4-1 shootout win.

“It wasn’t easy and they never stopped pushing us in the game, but I’m incredibly proud of our group for their collective commitment today. Every player, all 22, played and all 22 contributed,“ said DiCicco. ”Making all four penalties and Marley Filippone saving two was really nice but their play in the 100 minutes was the most important part. It was a great execution of our plan. Now we get ready for a rivalry game vs. Wasatch on Thursday."
