August is generally a quiet time on the NBA calendar, but the Utah Jazz reportedly made a trade on Friday night.
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported late Friday that the Jazz are trading wings Cody Williams and Jon Konchar to the Minnesota Timberwolves in exchange for wing Josh Green and cash.
In trading Williams, the Jazz are ending a development project that has never really gotten off the ground since the team selected him with the 10th pick of the 2024 NBA Draft out of Colorado.
The 6-foot-8, 190-pound Williams was always seen as a long term prospect more than one who might contribute quickly in his career, but through two seasons, he was rarely able to make much of a positive impact, even as he averaged 23 minutes per game on tanking Utah teams.
By trading Konchar, the Jazz are dealing a player they acquired in February from the Memphis Grizzlies as part of the trade that landed them Jaren Jackson Jr.
In 26 games for Utah after the trade, Konchar averaged 5.9 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3 assists and a block per game. More than that, he brought veteran leadership and hustle to a young Jazz squad.
It is little surprise that Green was part of a trade. On Thursday, Charania reported that the Timberwolves agreed to a two-year, 12.4 million deal with Jonathan Kuminga, and because of that, they would need to trade or waive and stretch Green’s contract by Saturday to make room for Kuminga’s deal.
According to Spotrac, Green is entering the final year of a contract and will make just shy of $14.7 million in the 2026-27 season. Williams and Konchar combined will make just shy of $12.2 million.
Green, 25, is listed at 6-foot-6 and 200 pounds and will be entering his seventh NBA season. A native of Australia, he moved to the United States to play college basketball for the Arizona Wildcats.
After one season, he declared for the 2020 NBA Draft and was taken 18th overall by the Dallas Mavericks. Green has mostly been a reserve during his career, with the Mavericks and then the Charlotte Hornets. In all he has averages of 6.3 points, 2.5 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.
In July, he was traded by the Hornets to the Timberwolves as part of the deal that was headlined by LaMelo Ball and Naz Reid.
Charania reported that the Timberwolves are expected to keep Williams but waive and stretch Konchar, and he also reported that the Jazz were looking for another wing player to join the likes of Brice Sensabaugh, Svi Mykhailiuk and Josh Okogie off the bench.
