Utah basketball will start the season without one of its most promising incoming players.
The school announced Friday that center Fynn Schott had surgery on his right leg this week and will miss the start of the 2026-27 season.
The surgery was successful, according to the program, and Schott is expected to make a full recovery and return to the Runnin’ Utes this season. No timetable was specified.
The 20-year-old Schott is a 6-foot-11 big man who hails from Fürstenfeld, Austria. He was officially added to Utah’s roster at the end of August.
Schott most recently played for Hestia Menorca of the Spanish Primera FEB, averaging 2.5 points and 3.5 rebounds in nearly 15 minutes per game last season.
His true potential, though, has been showcased in his work with the Austrian National Team. Over the past two years, Schott has played for the country’s senior national team — and suited up with former Utah great Jakob Poeltl.
During two games against the Netherlands at the 2027 FIBA World Cup Qualifiers earlier this year, Schott averaged 17 points, 13 rebounds, 2.5 assists and a block per game for Austria.
The Utes, who will have their first official practice next Monday, will start exhibition play with a game at UNLV on Oct. 7.
Utah will also play two more exhibition games — at Nevada on Oct. 17 and at home against Oregon on Oct. 21 — before opening the regular season against Long Beach State on Nov. 2 at the Huntsman Center.
