Skyline and Pine View’s football teams can score. It’s as simple as that, so it surprised no one when the No. 6 Eagles and No. 11 Panthers combined for a 34-point first quarter in their first-round battle in the 4A playoffs Friday that left Skyline up 21-13.

Things changed quickly though, as the Panthers scored only one more time over the next 36 minutes while the Eagles’ offense flew high with another 28 points to roll to a 49-19 victory.

“I knew we could probably score on offense, but I was worried because they score a lot of points and (Pine View quarterback Coy Doman is) fantastic,” said Skyline coach Brandon Matich.

“They have receivers that get behind coverages and just float, and he finds them. He gets the ball out quick, so even last night at 2 in the morning we’re texting each other and trying to figure out different ways to cover. Our defensive staff did a phenomenal job. They stuck to our base stuff that they taught the kids and I told them, ‘It’s about doing what’s right for the kids and not trying to be right.’”

The Panthers are typically a team that scores around 40 points per game behind Doman, but the Eagles’ defense really only allowed Doman and his receivers to find their rhythm on one drive.

Otherwise, they thwarted any momentum Pine View had and forced turnovers to their offense the ball back quickly when it already had all of the momentum.

For Skyline, it has shown all season that it also has a prolific offense that nears the 35 points per game mark, and it was on full display Friday with running back Jonah Mailei piloting the way.

Mailei rushed for a trio of touchdowns in the first quarter alone and added two more later in the game in the notable performance.

“Our whole (offensive) line was just blocking, and I was following my guys,” Mailei said.

Added Matich: “We have a kid that can run the football, so we’re going to run the football, run the football and take a shot, and that’s just what we did.”

Mailei, who has committed to play collegiately at Utah, scored the Eagles’ first four touchdowns from 24, five, 23 and seven yards out before Tate Johnson threw a beautiful 71-yard pass to Judah Valle, who executed his route perfectly and beat his defender.

“Tate was worried he wasn’t going to be able to throw the ball well in the rain and he did,” Matich said. “He stood up and threw the ball great in the rain all night.

“What I really love about Tate was him being unselfish and wanting to run the ball and allowing Jonah to have that moment. We’re blessed to have him. He is such a good teammate.”

Skyline concluded its scoring with Valle rushing in from two yards out in the first minute of the fourth quarter.

For Pine View, its first touchdown came from Max Yocham on a 93-yard kickoff return and its second when Jonah Myers capped off a Panther drive by snagging a nice toss from Doman in the back of the end zone.

Doman connected with Yocham in the third quarter for a 25-yard TD to round out the Panthers’ scores.

Skyline will play the winner of the Provo-Stansbury game in the second round of the playoffs.
