Experts continue to implore people who choose to wear a face mask under the nose to reconsider this idea, since it’s not really doing much to save anyone.
What’s going on?
Since the pandemic began, people have chosen to wear face masks under their nose. You’ve seen them. People who wear the mask with their nose poking out from the top of the mask.
- “I see it everywhere. I see it in grocery stores. … I tend to see it, actually, (with) people wearing their masks outside,” Colin Furness, an infection control epidemiologist with the University of Toronto, told Global News in Canada.
Wearing a mask under the nose is pretty much like not wearing a mask at all, he said.
- “If someone’s got their nose peeking out, it’s really no different than not wearing a mask.”
Comfort and masks
A high number of Utahns feel comfortable going out into public without masks amid the pandemic, as the Deseret News reported.
- 41% of people statewide are comfortable without a face covering.
- 19% of Utahns said it’ll take longer than six months before they feel safe without a mask.
