Walmart has decided to change its Black Friday strategy for the 2020 holiday season because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Some context:

  • Normally, Walmart offers one major day of big deals on Black Friday. Sometimes Thanksgiving gets a little bit of love, too, with some slashed prices.
  • Walmart announced earlier this year it will close its stores on Thanksgiving for the first time since the 1980s. Target and Best Buy will do the same.

What’s new:

Walmart will offer three November sales days, which begin online and then shift to stores.

The dates are:

Customers can order their items online and pick them up at the store between three to seven days after the initial purchase.

There will be a separate locations — likely in parking lots — where shoppers can pick up those Black Friday items.

Why it matters:

Scott McCall, Walmart U.S. executive vice president and chief merchandising officer, told USA Today that the days will keep customers safe.

  • “These new events are really going to meet two critical needs for us. One is around customer and associate safety and the other one is meeting our customers where they are shopping, which is online.”
