After a wild year that brought us eccentric Pepsi flavors like pineapple and apple pie, the flavor mill at the soft beverage company shows no signs of slowing down come 2021.
On Dec. 17, Pepsi announced via Twitter the advent of a potential new flavor: hot cocoa.
Cleverly dubbed “Cocoa” Cola, the announcement came with a caveat: The new chocolate and marshmallow flavored beverage would only be made available if the announcement post received 2021 retweets, a fairly modest goal for one of the world’s largest beverage distributors.
The post stated:
“What’s sweeter than saying ‘bye’ to the worst year ever? Pepsi ‘Cocoa’ Cola - the latest concept from the Pepsi Test Kitchen.
Want to try and get your hands on it? 2,021 RTs and we’ll make a batch.”
In less than 24 hours, the post surpassed its goal and the company posted a follow-up message:
“Well, it looks like you’re all pretty thirsty for some Pepsi ‘Cocoa’ Cola. Stay tuned for details coming in 2021!”
Todd Kaplan, the vice president of marketing at Pepsi, recently commented on the new flavor in a press release. He said (via comicbook.com):
“There is nothing more classic than hot cocoa on a winter day, but this year has been anything but typical. So why not bring together the delicious taste of a Pepsi with the delicious, wintery taste of chocolate and marshmallow and bring some unexpected joy to our fans this seasons?...We are confident we nailed Pepsi “Cocoa” Cola and cant’ wait to get this in the hands of cola fans this winter.”
While some skeptics might understandably be on the fence about this unorthodox new flavor, our friends at BestProducts pointed out that “Cocoa” Cola probably makes for a delicious Pepsi float!
