California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Monday that the stay-at-home order in the state — which is set to expire in Southern California on Dec. 30 — will likely be extended into the new year.
- “Based on those current trend lines, we’ll need to extend that stay-at-home order,” Newsom said, according to SFGate.com.
Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly said the state will make a decision over the weekend or early next week.
- Health officials will review projections for four weeks into the future to determine if stay-at-home orders should last.
- “If you’re looking at the 28th of December, you’re looking at, what are ICU projections around the 25th of January?” said Ghaly, according to SFGate.com.
Trouble in Southern California
Officials told The Los Angeles Times last week that Southern California has 0% capacity in its intensive care unit beds, and the situation may only get worse.

Hospitals have started to move patients around to help them receive more care since ICU beds are limited.
- “That often means moving some patients who would typically be in the intensive care unit to other areas of the hospital, such as a recovery area, or keeping them in the emergency room for longer than normal.”
