A new mysterious monolith appeared San Luis Obispo in Southern California inside Los Padres National Forest, according to Yahoo! News.

What happened:

Residents spotted the new monolith this week after another object — which had appeared on a hiking trail in Atascadero — disappeared last week, according to Yahoo.

  • The object appears to be 2 feet wide and 10 feet tall. It appears to be made of stainless steel.
  • “When we realized it was a monolith, we started freaking out and flew the drone back, jumped in the truck, drove ASAP to the spot, and then danced around it like idiots for a few minutes,” said San Luis Obispo resident Matt Carver, who spotted the object while on a hiking trip.

How it’s different

  • The San Luis Obispo mask has a symbol at the top of a red UFO beaming someone up with the word “caution” scribed over it, according to Yahoo News.

California monolith appears and then disappears

The monolith craze began in Utah when a team of biologists discovered it, which prompted a social media reaction from all over the world. Monoliths were later found in Romania, California, Netherlands, England and Pennsylvania. Another was recently shown in Las Vegas.

The California monolith — discovered in Pine Mountain in Atascadero — was eventually taken down and replaced with a cross, as I wrote for the Deseret News.

Later, a group replaced the cross with a new monolith.

  • “We intended for it to be a piece of guerrilla art. But when it was taken down in such a malicious manner, we decided we needed to replace it,” Wade McKenzie, one of the first California monolith’s creators, told The New York Times.
