Swedish lawmakers Jens Holm and Hakan Svenneling nominated teenage climate change activist Great Thunberg for the 2020 Nobel Peace Prize thanks to her efforts to help politicians abide by the Paris Agreement, the Associated Press reports.

If 17-year-old Thunberg is selected as the laureate this year, she would join with Malala Yousafzai as the youngest Nobel Peace Prize recipients, according to The Hill.

Thunberg was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize last year, but the prize was awarded to Abiy Ahmed Ali, the prime minister of Ethiopia, for his efforts to resolve border conflicts with Eritrea.

Despite not being selected as Nobel laureate, Thunberg received a Right Livelihood Award, which is commonly known as the “Alternative Nobel,” NBC News reports. Following this, Thunberg was also chosen as Time Magazine’s Person of the Year in 2019.

Thunberg is well-known for her school strike to prevent climate change. She has also worked leaders in the United Nations, met with Pope Francis and inspired a global climate strike of 4 million people, Time Magazine reports.

Last month, she spoke in Davos, Switzerland, warning onlookers that they could not afford to become complacent about global warming, the New York Times reports,

“Our house is still on fire,” Thunberg said. “Your inaction is fueling the flames by the hour.”
