A new study suggests that babies and preschool-aged children can be at high risk for developing symptoms because of the coronavirus.

  • The study was published in the popular medical journal Pediatrics.

What the study found:

  • 6% of children reviewed in the study had severe issues, including massive respiratory problems.
  • About 50% had mild symptoms (fever, fatigue, cough, congestion)
  • About 39% became moderately sick with symptoms like pneumonia and lung problems.
  • 4% had no symptoms at all.
  • 125 children had severe symptoms.
  • 13 of the 125 severe cases were listed in critical condition.

Method:

  • The study reviewed 2,143 cases of children under 18 years old.
  • Researchers reviewed cases of children from China who reported their illnesses to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to Fox News.
  • One-third of cases tested positive for COVID-19. The other cases were suspected to have the disease based on X-rays, blood tests and recent exposure.

Young people remain at risk

  • New data from the CDC found that 38% of 508 hospitalized cases were from people between the ages of 20 and 54, a sign that young people can be infected with the coronavirus, according to The New York Times.
  • “I think everyone should be paying attention to this,” said . “It’s not just going to be the elderly. There will be people ages 20 and up. They do have to be careful, even if they think that they’re young and healthy,” Stephen S. Morse, a professor of epidemiology at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, told The New York Times.
